Washington National Cathedral to Rid Windows of Confederate Battle Flag

The Washington National Cathedral, one of the nation’s most prominent houses of worship, said on Wednesday that it would remove two images of the Confederate battle flag that have been part of its stained-glass windows for more than 60 years.

The windows that depict the two flags were installed in 1953 to pay tribute to Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Gen. Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army. The cathedral said in a statement that, while the flags will be removed shortly, the windows would remain to “serve as a catalyst for the difficult and uncomfortable conversations about race that we need to have on the road to racial justice.”

“Instead of simply taking the windows down and going on with business as usual, the cathedral recognizes that, for now, they provide an opportunity for us to begin to write a new narrative on race and racial justice at the cathedral and perhaps for our nation,” the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, the cathedral’s canon theologian, said in the statement.

Southern history shall not be revised to meet the demands of contemporary hysterical lunatics. It is what it is. Deal with it. If you don't like this country's history move. Simple as that!

Well maybe they should just tear the cathedral down, you got to be kidding, that's why I'm voting for Trump, tied of this political correct BS

you can not erase the past because some liberals are offended. Next we will be telling Germany sorry for the D day invasion and sorry to japan for dropping the a bomb that ended the war.

let's get rid of everything that is historical since it was built on the backs of slaves. that means the white house has to go and the liberty bell and everything else. let's destroy the pyramids in egypt and everything everywhere to create new jobs to rebuild everything again. that's as stupid as everyone complaining about the past. let history be just that, history. the future doesn't exist any more than yesterday does. Only now matters, so start living in the now and stop dwelling on the past.

Leave the windows as they are and let THAT be the catalyst for eternal discussion and an appreciation of what brought us to today.

Who cares what are on those windows. I am a Southerner and I love those two great Americans, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. I am sick and tired of these uneducated Libturds erasing and rewriting history. Live those windows and monuments alone.

I am sick and tired of seeing monuments for MLK and now we will have to have $20 bills with a criminal woman on them. This country is in bad shape.

If we could abolish all items that are in any way connected to slavery wouldn't that be like trying to abolish the symbols of war crimes committed against the Jews? We cannot STAMP OUT all things offensive and we really should not try. There are people in this world that now say that the concentration death camps didn't really happen. Are we attempting to say that slavery didn't happen? What is the reason for abolishing historical references? YES, they are offensive....but isn't that the point?

What country didn't have slaves at some point? Some still do! There is not a person in the USA that had a parent or grandparent that was a slave here in the USA. How many years will they get special treatment. Do we hear the Jews asking for special treatment from the atrocities they suffered?

The muslims swear the holocaust never happened. Glad someone documented it all, but they still lie ad claim it never happened.

America isn't America anymore----much
of the blame can go to our President !

Why is a confederate flag offensive? Because you heard someone say it was offensive? Why do you ignorant morons try to equate Southerners and the Confederacy to the Nazi Germans?? I don't know of any slave that was burnt to death? Can you prove to me that this happened? Did Southerners try to eradicate an entire race? Hell No so quit comparing us to the Nazi's!!!!

2:36...If you thought I was comparing the South with Nazi Germany you missed the whole point. It was comparable only by the fact that some would have you believe that these events never happened and seem intent on getting special rights to what can be said or owned. When humans are treated as animals or worse than animals the events can only be compared by the historical significance of the event. I am not black or liberal...BUT I do feel that history is something that needs to be remembered so that it is not repeated. That was the whole point...nothing more.

Take out the flags and people will wonder who the heck these guys are and why there's a window to memorialize them. If you want to eliminate all records of slavery, start with the Pyramids at Giza.

I wish they would not give in their is too much change, our forefathers fought for our country and this flag as well. Cannot even a church such as this stand up for what was.
