Paramedics Union To Launch Petition Drive For Binding Arbitration After Stalemate With City

OCEAN CITY — While the resort remains at an impasse with its paramedics over proposed shift changes, the local Fire/EMS union this week began a petition drive to put a referendum question for binding interest arbitration on the election ballot this November.

In late February, the clock expired on negotiations between the town and the Career Firefighter Paramedics Association of Ocean City, or IAFF Local 4269, on a new three-year contract, resulting in the town’s “last, best and final offer” essentially becoming the new contract by default. The negotiations broke down over the town’s position on eliminating the paramedics’ long-standing 24-hour shifts.

Currently, most paramedics work in 24-hour shifts, followed by 72 hours off. However, citing a variety of reasons, including potential missed calls or delayed responses, the town remains adamant about eliminating the 24-72 shift rotation in favor of an alternative 12-hour shift or some hybrid of the two. Eliminating the 24-hour shift became a point of contention in the negotiations for a new contract for the IAFF 4269, forcing the union to walk away from the bargaining table.

These are the biggest bunch of ungrateful crybabies in the "far service". They average $100,000 and work less than 2 days a week, yet they are never happy.

Good luck Ms. Whittington and clan. Mark this day as notice when the public once and for all shuts you down, Stupid is, as stupid does! Glad you guys inherited our Parsonburg trash. There is a lot to be said for doing what's right for the fire service, unions forget that a long time ago.

This is disgraceful! As a past member of the Paramedic Foundation, I am ashamed of the fine group that once cared about more than their own agenda. With binding arbitration, it won't just be about shifts, it will be about MONEY! If the control to spend our tax dollars is taken away from the Council, and given to a liberal arbitrator, just watch what happens. I think we should start a petition to take away their collective bargaining, then we will see them scream. Give an inch, take a mile, union mentality.

The current union president is a power hungry little twit that doesn't have a clue. When he was a volunteer President it was a disaster. Karma, it's a wonderful thing. Shame such a once great group of EMTs have gone straight to .....

Amen! He promised to work with the Town and Chief's, and all he has done is lied and pissed them off. You get a lot more with Honey Ryan. You expect me to solicit signatures for a lost cause, think again. Why don't you tell the membership how much of our dues are going to the lawyer's. You have been a huge letdown, but no one else wants the job.

The IAFF will try to ride the coat tails of the FOP. Good luck loser's, you don't have the energy, commitment, or dollars to wage this battle.

So true. We (FOP) worked our ass off for years. The FF are way to lazy to succeed, after all, their sleeping.

And if hadn't been right after 911 they would have never gotten it then. This is the wrong climate for unions and overpaid government employees. Gonna be a serious wake up call for the spoiled FF in OC
