Seaford Ice faces $77,000 OSHA fine after worker loses legs in accident

Seaford Ice is facing $77,000 in penalties from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration after a work lost both legs below the knee.

OSHA launched an investigation on May 28, 2015, after learning of a worker amputation at Seaford Ice Inc. The agency found that the employee fell into an unguarded conveyor opening while breaking ice. The worker lost both of his legs below the knee.

Following the May incident, OSHA cited the company on November 18 for one willful, five serious and three other than serious violations. The agency, according to a release, cited the willful violation for lack of machine guards. Electrical hazards, unguarded machines, hazard communication violations and the absence of a program, which prevents the accidental start-up or movement of machinery, were among the serious violations. The other-than-serious violations involved lack of a personal protective equipment assessment and electrical violations. Proposed penalties total $77,000.

An OSHA release stated that it was the second time a worker suffered an amputation due to lack of machine guards at the company’s Seaford plant. In 2012, an employee had a foot amputated after it touched a conveyor. OSHA determined that the conveyor openings were too large, and its guard was inadequate.

As the conservatives call for cutting of major funding to many agencies such as OSHA watch them begin an agency wide "fundraising by fines" effort to show their worth!

i can't believe they didn't address these issues when it happened before. the double amputee should be in for a nice payday which will ultimately force this business to close.

3:50 OSHA would not have been there if they had corrected the issue after the first incident. The fine is the least of their problems once a PI attorney gets to the injured worker and goes after damages above and beyond workers comp based on gross negligence.

Is that all! And some poor guy lost both his legs. I think my legs are worth much more than 77K. I hope he made out better with his law suit.

Why not install lock out tag outs? Why allow employees to walk near the conveyors? This ice plant has had way more violations than this. Most kept silent to keep their jobs. Just as many places around here. The good ol boy connection has to stop.

Really? It gets more difficult everyday to read the comments made by people that have such little understanding of how the business world works. OHSA fined the business $77K. The injured employee does not get that money, OSHA does. The employee can file a workers' comp claim and a lawsuit for negligence.

OSHA just wants the money. Ever once in a while they do something useful. Most of the time they are just there to make money.
