Police said a Frederick man choked and beat his girlfriend repeatedly over the weekend, then tried to flee the area when she called 911.
Aras Khalal Mahmoud, 22, of the 1400 block of Key Parkway, was charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property less than $1,000 and three counts of second-degree assault, according to charging documents filed in Frederick County District Court. His girlfriend had obvious signs of injury when police met her at her apartment shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday.
“He tried to kill me,” the woman kept telling officers, according to charging documents.

Mahmoud apologized the next day and swore on a copy of the Quran that he would never hurt her again, but became abusive almost immediately after she agreed to take him to the McDonald’s in the 1200 block of West Patrick Street just before 3 p.m. Sunday, the documents state.
