I've been in Chesapeake Lodge # 147 since 1985. I've been in the Scottish Rite and the York Rite as a 32nd and York High Mason as a member. The Times reported Steve Marshall as a 'past member' of 147 in the obit who named Marshall as a 'hero'.
All this hype is oats whom has already gone through the horse.
If I were the Daily Times staff, I'd endeavor to fact check before using an organizations name for no more in name only stolen valor.

Marshall was in the process of becoming a member, not a member in good standing. He DID NOT stand the third degree which is a pre-requisite for membership as the members and the Master has to bestow full membership at the point he does the work before him with a positive result. He DID NOT so as a plebe who failed him nor his family can say he WAS a member when in fact he defaulted.

I'm appalled whoever told this lie would include it in his obit.

In all fairness, I do not believe the Daily Times writes their own obits any more. Usually that is provided by the Funeral Home. I could be wrong though.
you are correct, the funeral director writes the obituary using information obtained from the the family. there is a form the funeral director uses to ask questions in order to write the obit. the information comes from the family, therefore why would the newspaper or the funeral director feel the need to do a fact check. also it is not uncommon for a person write their own obituary in today's society.
Obits written by funeral home at the direction of the family, with no fact check, only family memories and say so, then submitted to Legacy (National online obit service for most papers) and then picked up by the print editions.
Complaints should be directed toward the family if desired, not the fourth hand receiver.
the guy is dead. Why kick a dead horse. I have no clue what your group is. Need to show some class to the guy.
Mr. Albero stands correct, the family writes the obit and provides it to the funeral home. Evidently this person hasn't had to deal with much grief in his/her life. Get a life, the man is deceased.
"Get a life, the man is deceased."
Doesn't matter unless of course you do not value honesty.
I thought Masons were all hush hush about their standing and membership in the lodge so the family probably didn't have it straight anyway, go be appalled at yourself.
Masons are a cult anyway.
I can't believe this crap is brought up on the DAY of this man's funeral. You know, to whomever wrote this article, you should be ashamed. Maybe Steve was not the perfect person, but he was a damn fine man. Are any of us perfect? I'm sure you are certainly not since you had to bring up this small detail in the overall scheme of things. I really hope you weren't a friend of his, because with friends like you, who needs enemies? I, like many, watched Steve fight his battle with cancer over the past few years. His fight would make you envy his courage. He still made it to work every day that he wasn't receiving treatments and before he lost his battle, he STILL tried to make it in or at least call his office daily. He was one of the kindest people with a HUGE heart and would go out of his way to help anyone. If you needed someone to talk to, he would listen. I can say all these good things and I have not known him anywhere NEAR as long as many people here have. For the writer of the article that spawned more positive comments than negative, I hope that lump of coal you get in your stocking this year makes your heart leap with joy over what his family has lost. Husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. God Bless you Steve, you ARE a hero and have left a legacy that will be remembered for a lifetime.
It's a longstanding tradition that the only time that you have a chance of getting a fair deal from the Daily Times is on the obits page.
Thank you 9:10 I could not agree more with you.People were also complaining about the fire whistle during the funeral procession.Really? Mr. Marshall was loved by many and respected highly in the community.Let his loved ones mourn in peace.
