Pretty soon, police departments nationwide will have to lower their hiring standards, increase salaries and benefits, and put a lot more money into marketing for new hires, because the men and women who would usually be candidates for law enforcement careers will choose another path.
Becoming a police officer used to be a family tradition. It's not just an Irish thing, as is often depicted in movies and on television. I cannot count how many father/son and even mother/daughter, police families you can find out there in various departments, of all different colors and backgrounds. It's an honorable profession serving the community, and children who are raised in cop households often grow up with the same sense of civic responsibility as their parents. I even know of one family in the Washington, DC, area who has family (cousins, brothers, etc.) in almost every police department in and around the city. Meet one "Officer Wigglesworth" and I guarantee you, he's related to all of the others.
But the times, they are a'changin. And not for the better. Because the overall attitude toward law enforcement has shifted and changed. The profession that was so revered after 9/11 has instead become itself the target of hate. A lot of people have tried to make the community's problems with law enforcement a race issue. But the cop killers are indiscriminate as to whom they murder. Black, white, Hispanic, Asian - it's all about the color of the uniform, so to speak, not the color of the officer's skin.
Officer Randolph Holder, a 33-year-old member of the New York Police Department, and a third generation cop, was gunned down by a bike thief a few days ago.

Personally, I would like to see wages raised for law enforcement right now. I would also like to see higher standards set for who can become a police officer. Those two things would go a long way to eliminating what we are settling for in a small percentage of officers at the moment.

Isn't it odd that no commercials have come on TV in recent years urging young men and women to enter law enforcement? Police departments are heavily comprised of ex military personnel because they lost their jobs when they were deployed.That's right,their jobs were no longer available when they returned stateside,or the company they had worked for had downnsized while they were deployed.All of this basically proves that a LE career was their only option other than being homeless.Sad.

I was a cop , I'm in my 70s , wish I was still a cop , easy to get around all the BS that cop haters present. It's a lawless country now , so have at it , I still have my weapons of lawless destruction.

Yeah, all those ex-military types think they are still dealing with armed insurgents. Barking commands and demanding instant obedience, using overwhelming (and over-the-top) force and escalating the smallest incident into murders, beatings, BS arrests and "lessons" taught to those serfs who don't "comply".
Citizens who dare question the police are in serious danger.
If you want a job that insures you "go home safe" every night, then turn in that gun and badge and take up a security position at the courthouse. You'll still get to bark commands, but with no danger.
"Going home safe every night" has NEVER been part of your job description and you know it. It's liberally used, though, to justify shooting a suspect 47 times, gang beating drunk college kids, and beating old ladies into the hospital. "I'm SO scared, I had to shoot that kid!!. I couldn't tell the difference between an air rifle and an AR-15 (even though I used one for a few years)!!.
And then call it "justified". Which comforts the parents of that 13 year old kid IMMENSELY. They all feel much better knowing their kid died so you could go home safely to YOUR family. Their family?

Maybe the public view of police would change if the good cops stopped covering for the bad cops.Whenever there is an incident involving police brutality,no matter how guilty that officer is,their misdeeds are covered up and/or condoned.

For all those displeased with the services they receive from their local law enforcement agency, I'd love to see you step up and take over. You can't and won't because you're all talk. As for the morons that thought former military people became LEOs because there was nothing else available - I wanted to be a cop in high school and that was always my intent. I went in the military for the physical and mental challenges, the chance to serve my country, & I thought the discipline would serve me well as a cop. I feel honored to serve my community and I love to assist those they need assistance or protection. I do all I can to educate and increase their awareness and got a lot of compliments from the people I serve. If you choose not to appreciate that so be it, I know how you really act on the street face to face. People on the street in my community are much more respectful and polite in person and that's what really matters to me.

They have already lowered their standards decades ago, and we are seeing the result of that. Then they bring the military back, with their mental issues, and let them run rampant. As most should know by now, there is very little (outward) difference between military personnel and police nowadays, including their weapons and tactics. That is NOT a good thing.
