Wicomico County to End Speed Camera Contract

Wicomico County will not renew its speed camera contract, according to an article in DelmarvaNow.com.

Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver said that the county contract with Redspeed will not be renewed after it expires in December. According to DelmarvaNow:

"Culver said drivers have changed their habits and the Wicomico County cameras are no longer making money like they used to. The money that came in would go toward public safety, he said."
Wicomico's program was far smaller than speed camera programs run by more populous jurisdictions such as Montgomery, Prince George's, or Howard County. Monthly revenues from the program peaked in the summer of 2013. But by FY2015-2016 revenues had shriveled up to the point where the county only projected to bring in $35,000 for the year, according to the county budget.

They'll be gone for a while, but they'll probably be back once more drivers again push beyond the speed limit in the areas that the portables were used.

No this is absolutely stupid. The County isn't losing money and the drivers haven't learned. This isn't costing the County a nickel so why do away with it.

Now you are going to see the City of Salisbury jump right on this you bunch of damn fools.

The city of Salisbury needs the money to spend on bringing downtown back from the dead.

Any revenue generated by speed cameras has to be spent on law enforcement, not on anything else. Not downtown, not streets, not social programs, not anything else.

I thought it was about safety, not money?

Yeah kinda like how toll $ vo to bridges.

No they will spend it on increasing. Minutes on Obama phones.

Leave.

That is NOT THE REASON!! they are gone because someone didn't understand the Maryland LAW! These vehicles that were equipped with cameras were "running vehicles" Meaning they were "on", Ignition turned, "running". Maryland law states that you CAN NOT LEAVE A RUNNING VEHICLE UNATTENDED!!

it is against Maryland law! So whoever signed this contract and spent Wicomico County monies didn't comply with the Maryland law!!

AGAIN, WASTE OF TAXPAYERS HARD EARNED MONEY! you can not LEAVE A VEHICLE RUNNING AND UNATTENDED!

You can leave a vehicle running and unattended in maryland ie remote starters. Just have to Have the doors locked and keys out of the vehicle.

Right on 10:58,for the children.

No true 12:41 pm!! Been ticketing many times doors locked and running into store and Wicomico County sitting right there and gave out tickets.

Happened to myself and numerous other people. Kept car running because of animal in the car, for example, and got a ticket from Wicomico County.

instant $70.00 fine in the State of Maryland. So who ok'd spending tax payer dollars letting a vehicle run unattended all to give people a speeding ticket???

Went by many times near schools and indeed the car (or suv) was running! That is how the equipment was taking picture. Running engine!

It is totally illegal. The only reason why they cancelled this program is because someone complained and finally figures it out that YES Wicomico County was BREAKING THE LAW!!!!

I just found a facebook post by the state police that said it was not illegal to use the remote start. Here is their explanation.

Maryland State Police : Idling cars are those with the keys in the ignition. This would not apply to vehicles with remote starters.

This was posted November 9th 2012.

Is the Sheriff's office breaking the law by issuing tickets for something that is NOT illegal per the state police?

There's nothing like a $40 or $70 fine in your mail with a photo of your car going over 12 mph over the limit to get your attention. Once burned...

this is about the mobile cameras they hide in vehicles. what about the ones on the sidewalk

And lottery money would go to education.

Ones on sidewalk run by electric (Salisbury City Speed Cameras).
The ones cars are running that were located in front of Wicomico County schools are the ones they are talking about.
BELOW IS ARTICLE IN THE WASHINGTON POST. ILLEGAL TO LEAVE A RUNNING CAR UNATTENDED DOORS LOCKED OR NOT!!!
You are apparently breaking the law.

No, really, you are.

Let me explain.

A remote starter starts the car without anyone turning a key. Press a button on a keychain, the car starts. Magic. Remote starters are most often used in extreme weather situations: in cold weather, to warm the car up; in warm weather, to cool the car down. These are cherished and necessary devices, up there with iPhones and toothbrushes.

But in Maryland, remote starters are an illicit convenience.

The law essentially says this: Drivers cannot leave cars unatte

Is Wicomico County going to be fined or charged for leaving these vehicles unattended!!! I sure was and they are NOT ABOVE THE LAW!!

Anonymous said...

They just put a new one in at Bennett middle.

Anonymous said...

Thank God it's over.

Everyone ticketed by one needs reimbursement. Cops can't break a law to charge with breaking the law. Oh that's right. They're above the law.

4:16 PM

I was not asking about their power source. I was asking if they were going to get rid of the ones on the sidewalk or just the mobile ones.

I drive by several of these every day and have never received a ticket. For some of these individuals whining about multiple tickets, the problem may be behind the wheel.

Any and every ticket not paid needs to be forgiven. And ones paid need to be reimbursed. They were never accurate and was illegal to boot. They weren't calibrated every day like the laws require and you couldn't confront your accuser. You had to write a guy in Fredrick MD to show up to testify if so. Last I knew its not my job to provide the states evidence against me. The expert should be in court on the county dime. Remember the state has to prove and provide all evidence. It's not your job!

Time to tear up the mounted ones again.
