Crime rates for Salisbury, MD

With a crime rate of 74 per one thousand residents, Salisbury has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 14. Within Maryland, more than 99% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Salisbury. In fact, after researching dangerous places to live, NeighborhoodScout found Salisbury to be one of the top 100 most dangerous cities in the U.S.A.

Separately, it is always interesting and important to compare a city's crime rate with those of similarly sized communities - a fair comparison as larger cities tend to have more crime. NeighborhoodScout has done just that. With a population of 31,507, Salisbury has a combined rate of violent and property crime that is very high compared to other places of similar population size. Regardless of whether Salisbury does well or poorly compared to all other cities and towns in the US of all sizes, compared to places with a similar population, it fares badly. Few other communities of this size have a crime rate as high as Salisbury.

The crime data that NeighborhoodScout used for this analysis are the seven offenses from the uniform crime reports, collected by the FBI from 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, and include both violent and property crimes, combined.

Now let us turn to take a look at how Salisbury does for violent crimes specifically, and then how it does for property crimes. This is important because the overall crime rate can be further illuminated by understanding if violent crime or property crimes (or both) are the major contributors to the general rate of crime in Salisbury.

For Salisbury, we found that the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small). Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon. According to NeighborhoodScout's analysis of FBI reported crime data, your chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes in Salisbury is one in 89.

In addition, NeighborhoodScout found that a lot of the crime that takes place in Salisbury is property crime. Property crimes that are tracked for this analysis are burglary, larceny over fifty dollars, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In Salisbury, your chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is one in 16, which is a rate of 63 per one thousand population.

Any suggestions on how to address the problem?

I would be interested in how Wicomico County ranks with crime percent compared to other Maryland Counties. I think if you include the entire county, it helps lower the number despite the crime within the city limits - no matter how high Salisbury ranks on its own.

7:02, Excellent question.

I would recommend that all law enforcement expose ALL criminal activity properly.

I would recommend they send out press releases to ALL media and not just ones who will either refuse to publish them and or cover them up.

Crime has been covered up for more than 20 years now, seriously. You never heard of crime statistics until Salisbury News came along and started forcing other news outlets to do the same. That took years.

You see, once you become aware of just how bad it is, it will become a major topic during elections. For example, Jake Day and Jim Ireton are trying to convince everyone that crime is down. OK, you tell me, you just read this report, IS CRIME DOWN? ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERSHIP?

You see, I get labeled the bad guy because I'm the ONLY ONE willing to challenge the establishment. Jim, Jake, Mike & Barbara come back swinging by saying, really, you actually believe that guy Joe Albero! Well, is it Joe Albero or is it factual, documented information published by OTHERS?

These slick talking nice guys are just plain full of crap and you people actually believe them. Riddle me this Batman, where's the crime information for the County ever since Mike Lewis was elected????? Is the man actually making a difference? Well, you'd never know by their Website, that's for sure. In Salisbury, what do you get, SHOPLIFTERS and the Chief jumping into the River.

The problem is, the Eastern Shore covers it all up. It needs to be exposed before the public can finally hold these people accountable. Salisbury & Wicomico County needs Salisbury News, love me or hate me, I don't care.

What Salisbury & Wicomico County don't need is ALL of your local MSM. They're full of crap and never serve the public. they serve the special interests and the almighty advertisers.

Joe I have a serious question if we were number 2 in the list and now we are 50 or whatever that's better right?

7:44, REALLY?

Clearly you've never been a victim of a crime.

Clearly you haven't had to make a decision as to where you'd be sending your child off to college.

Clearly your not a young lady making a critical decision to relocate to Salisbury for a job.

The information that is put out there is that Salisbury is safer, not safe.

I'll not expose WHO I had a recent conversation with but I will tell you this, they are very high up in law enforcement. To make a long story short, they flat out admitted THEY would NOT walk Downtown at night. They went on to say that they're not that stupid and you have to know how to live in a Downtown like Salisbury. Man, that's messed up.

That was just two nights ago, so even if we use your numbers today and we say crime is down that low and this person says even they would not walk around, do YOU feel safer? Do YOU really think things are better?

When law enforcement only gives you a case number and tells you to just call your insurance company because they're never going to catch the suspect, those crimes never show up on the stats. So it's no wonder crime had stopped. Are you getting me now?

Do Not vote in jim Ireton for city council.

I don't want to hear college students complain about crime in the bury they should've done there homework.

8:36, Only a Liberal would call it "the bury".

Home ownership. Home ownership is the key to fix this issue. People that live in their own homes have skin in the game. Renters do not and could care less.

I agree. I have seen this happen many times. This is the main way to show that crime is down in Salisbury. Even though you call to report a crime it disappears and they never even investigate it. I can't remember the last time I have seen Salibury police officers dust for finger prints. Crime is so high they don't even waste their time dusting. That is your first clue crime is high.

That is exactly right!! I am sick and tired of these politicians in Salisbury crying Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! Jobs are already out their for the most part. We need incentive for home ownership in Salisbury instead of welcoming minorities with open arms to rent housing in Salisbury. Stop giving rental housing vouchers to the lazy welfare mongers.

I ask the same question as I ask all Politians, Law Enforcement (including Judges) and Civic Leaders "Where Is The Leadership At The Top"? Because of the lack of leadership in problem solving, which no one involves themselves in, we the people do our own protection as we see fit and then suffer the consequences because of lack of leadership.

Again,Rental properties and multi-family housing are a cancer that is almost impossible to reverse.

LMAO! Did you happen to catch WBOC tonight? They did this exact story, (copied from us) on crime and how dangerous Salisbury has become. No doubt they listened to my interview article as well and came to realize just how bad things are around here.

Look Folks, Salisbury News gets tens of millions of hits and has totally bypassed WBOC, WMDT & the DT's. It isn't even a matter of who's #1 any more. Mind you, they have a different format, I get that. However, less people are buying newspapers and our on line presence is second to none.

I told you when I started this 11 years ago no one would ever talk about crime unless it was a murder or someone robbed a bank. I think it's great they're finally letting their viewers know things are bad here. It's the right thing to do.

Yep...I carry a gun with me when I'm out.

This is at a crisis level. Sadly we have the wrong leadership in place to resolve it. Mayor Rainbow Mcmoron and Fake Day are standing on the bridge of the Titanic. What's it going to take? National Guard patrolling the streets at night while SPD waits in the donut shops? We, the law abiding citizens need to band together.

We need to not allow the families of ECI inmates to live here.

You're mixing apples with oranges. Salisbury is #2 in gun crime in the state of Maryland, next to Baltimore. This is a much wider assessment, with nationwide comparisons of more crimes than those involving guns alone.

1 in 16 not good for a crime risk, no matter how you slice it. We have lots of people to thank for this, starting with a former governor.
