LPR Alert Leads OCPD to a Stolen Vehicle and Wanted Individual

Rontari M. Warren
Traquan A. Spady
OCEAN CITY, MD – A stolen vehicle and wanted individual were located recently after an alert from a license plate reader (LPR).

On August 27, 2015, at approximately 11:15 a.m. Ocean City Communications received an alert from a LPR located on Route 50 of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle was reported stolen out of Accomack County, VA. A description of the vehicle was broadcast by dispatchers and officers quickly located the vehicle parked in the area of Worcester Street and Philadelphia Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by three males who were each detained without incident upon officer arrival.

A male, later identified as Traquan A. Spady, 18, of Eastville, VA, was in the driver’s seat and was also in possession of an open container of alcohol. It was learned by officers that one of the males, later identified as Rontari M. Warren, 21, of Birdsnest, VA, was wanted out of Columbia, SC, for probation violation for second degree burglary. The third individual was released on scene.A short time later, a concerned citizen located a handgun near the scene of the incident. Officers determined that the handgun had been thrown out of the vehicle by Warren as officers initially approached the vehicle.

Ocean City police have charged Warren with two counts of possession of a handgun, two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm after a prior felony conviction and knowingly altering a firearms identification number. Spady has been charged with theft of less than $10,000, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of an open container. Warren and Spady were seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner and transferred to the Worcester County Jail. Warren is currently being held on $100,000 bail and Spady is being held on $30,000 bail.

These two are the poster children for why I never go to OC.

Don't care, the invasion to my privacy is too great a price to pay - It's concerning to me the ways that this data could eventually be misused.

@1:03 keep your nose clean and your a** out of trouble and you have nothing to worry about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed 1:03
I've seen what happens to gun owners who are simply traveling through and a tag reader hits on them because they're registered gun owners. I'll be damned if me and my family will be treated like criminals because I'm a legal gun owner and the police ran my tag illegally.

So glad that those scumbags were caught. I really get frustrated to keep hearing how many criminals are allowed to get into Ocean City, but my dog isn't allowed on the boardwalk from May 1st-September 30th.
My dog acts 100% better than so many others that I see when I do go to the boardwalk.

1:40 that's not what LPR's hit on or track. LPR's hit on wanted registered owners, suspended/revoked drivers, stolen tags and stolen vehicles. You also do not own the tag but rent it from the state. You have zero expectation of privacy in a public place. Police also need NO REASON AT ALL to run any tag, any time, any where.

Really? Google it! It happened right here in Maryland. Several times! Don't tell me that all these things run is..... They run everything! Your whole history pops up when your tag is ran. Gun owner. Past convictions. Unpaid parking tickets. You name it the officer can see it.

Tell the sheeple that. If you don't need a reason to run a tag then why don't cops run them for friends? Cause they know damn well that if it gets out that they can be in trouble. Probable cause is needed to run a tag. Believe what you want people. Or better yet, make a simple call to a defense lawyer. Get the truth. You already know that cops such as 2:42 are allowed to and do lie to people. The last thing any cop wants to deal with is a person who knows his rights!

lol stupid 5:04 PC is not needed to run a tag. NOTHING, ZERO, ZILTCH is needed to run a tag. You are blatantly wrong.

I can assure you, they don't have all the capability the public thinks they do.

I have been setting up LPR in this area and can 100% assure you that no gun owner information is attached to your tag. You have to run that check in a specific file that LPR does not have access to. MD law only allows the stolen, wanted and MVA file, with exceptions for Missing/Endangered person alerts.

Stop the hysteria. Stick to facts.

Let's see how they spin this as "profiling".
