President Obama told the United Nations Monday that the world cannot stand by while Russia violates Ukraine’s sovereignty with impunity — and he left little doubt about which leader in attendance has the world’s strongest military.
“I lead the strongest military the world has ever known,” Mr. Obama told the general convention.
“I will never hesitate to protect my country…by force when necessary,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are expected to follow Mr. Obama at the U.N. podium.
Mr. Obama is also set to meet with Mr. Putin privately later in the day.
Earlier, the U.N. secretary-general for the first time called Monday for the situation in Syria to be referred to the International Criminal Court, as world leaders including President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin were addressing a global gathering with conflict at center stage.
