"He saw a darkened figure at the base of the stairwell who he believed was holding a weapon..."
Early Tuesday morning, a paranoid Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy irresponsibly fired his weapon at a fellow officer after he was spooked.
The deputy was responding to a call from a man who said he was hearing voices taunting him from across the street. After checking out the situation, he determined that the subject was drunk and determined that he posed no threat. As he was leaving the apartment, he entered a dimly lit stairwell.
According to FOX 40,
He saw a darkened figure at the base of the stairwell who he believed was holding a weapon.

He was correct!!
Happens more often than you know.
I don't see the problem.
Law enforcement field is ripe with less than stellar minds. It really does not interest people with sharp minds as a profession.
Another dangerous cop. Scaredy-cat with a gun. Scared to death in a job with risks. Shoot first, get the facts later.
He should be demoted to meter maid, without a gun.
The training of police officers seems to have gone completely to hell. There was a very similar incident in NYC a while back in which a new officer fired his gun in a darkened stairwell and killed someone. He's being prosecuted. This sounds like something I, a panicked civilian, might do if I were armed.
