Live hand grenade found, safely removed from Thurmont McDonald's parking lot

An active military-grade hand grenade was uncovered Saturday afternoon in the parking lot outside the Thurmont McDonald’s.

A bomb technician with the Office of the State Fire Marshal secured and removed the active grenade nearly two hours after first responders received the call, which prompted road closures, evacuations and a cordoned-off 50-foot perimeter around the site at 200 Frederick Road, just off of U.S. 15.

Bomb technician Dale Ednock said the grenade, found lodged about a foot under the pavement, was there for quite some time. The military grenade was likely a relic of the military base located in Thurmont several decades ago, Ednock said.

And no one knew that if the pin is in, the thing is harmless?

A sign company dropped or left a light ballast in a parking lot a while back, and the State Police Bomb Squad responded and "Disarmed" the device. What a waste of Taxpayers monies.

Wrong. Explosive material can become unstable after long periods of time. Or the exploding mechanism can deteriorate away leaving it susceptible to malfunction(go boom in your face) when moved. Know before you speak.

The pin could be, and probably is, rusted away.

Most WW 2 grenades are filled with a TNT mixture, that would degrade into a non explosive after several years. Same with the primer mixture, exposure to the unregulated temperatures, and weather elements cause dentation to be questionable. Most WW 2 ordinance that has been buried has to blown up by other means as it won't explode on its own anymore.

No doubt a disgruntled customer, Micky Dee's is pretty sucky these days.

You're wasting your breath. He's obviously just another XBox combat veteran.

It's a 99.999% probability that the explosive and primer have degraded to the point of being inert. But are *YOU* willing to take the chance and pick it up with your bare hands? I'm not!

The chance of that exploding is as probable as winning the Mega Million Lotto!
