Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash East of Laurel

Laurel, DE – Troopers are investigating a fatal crash that occurred east of Laurel early last evening that involved a motorcycle, a deer, and a car.

The incident happened around 8:45 p.m. Sunday August 9, 2015 as Brian E. Davis, 45 of Laurel, was operating a 2009 Honda VC7 motorcycle westbound on Laurel Road (SR 24) just west of Christ Church Road when a small female deer entered the roadway and directly into the path of the motorcycle. The front of the motorcycle struck the deer in the westbound lane causing it to fall over on the right side and slide, still entangled with the deer, in a southwesterly direction before coming to rest in the eastbound shoulder. As a result, Davis was totally ejected from his motorcycle and was lying in the westbound lane of travel. Sarah A. Sturgis, 38 of Frankford, was operating a 2008 Ford Mustang westbound on SR 24 and failed to see the motorcyclist lying in the roadway and subsequently ran over him. After impact, the Mustang came to a controlled stop on the south side of the roadway.

Brian Davis, who was wearing an approved DOT helmet, was transported from the scene by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Sarah Sturgis and her two passengers, a 24 year old female and a 9 year old female, were all properly restrained and were uninjured.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor for either operator in this case. SR24 between Christ Church Road and Old Stage Road was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

A real tragedy for the rider and his family-may God bless them and give them strength.

Having said that, how could a young, presumably sharp sensed person NOT see a victim in the roadway? Distracted driver, I suspect. I hope the authorities check her phone records and charge her accordingly.

What's it matter if the deer was female ?

...or that he was wearing a helmet??

Helmets are only good at speeds under 35 mph. Anything over that the chances are you won't survive regardless.
