I do not believe in the United Way , because of the very high salaries give to the leaders , last inquire I think the leader was making a little more than $600,000 plus perks. Also , they are very liberal left wing democrats.
6:33 AM agree - i do not donate to United Way or Red Cross. When working I felt required to donate to UW, (many workplace want a 100% participation) even though I did not approve where some of their monies went. My World War II veteran Father would not donate to Red Cross after coming home. We kids all followed his advice and do not either after hearing his stories. Many veterans feel this way.
At our local level all of the money raised goes to work here.
Local salaries are modest and staff is small.
There is a fee paid each year to national United Way but they have been fortunate in having an 'angel' who pays that so my first sentence remains true.
I may/may not agree with personal politics of everyone at a local group receiving local funding but I can designate which group receives my donation. There is very careful checking before groups are funded; some worthwhile endeavors don't make the cut for reasons associated with paperwork.
There was a scandal some years back where there were problems at the national level; that was a concern and was rooted out.
I have contributed and volunteered over several decades because I checked it out and it passed muster. Hope 6:33AM and any other doubters will get informed. Confident they will find good is being done locally with local dollars.

My father also fought in WW2, he didn't hold the Red Cross with much appreciation. My father was not raised by his mother or father, he was raised by his aunt. When she died the Red Cross made no attempt to arrange for him to get home to pay his respects and grieve. Their tier system for highly paid executives is nauseating.
MAC , the meals on wheels program is always begging for help and pleading poverty .Always blaming the political people for lack of funds. After an investigation about this , I found that they deliver meals to very wealthy
people , it's not what you think people , they need to revisit the way they think.
If you have the money to pay for the meal , then you will get it. United Way is forced down the throats of their employees .
United Way gives money to planned parenthood. No thanks.
I did a phone interview with the Director of the UW about 10 years ago. Right before the conversation ended she said to me, "oh by the way I am a close personal friend of your boss".
What kind of thing is that to say. Does that mean you spoke to him without my permission. And if you took that jerks word concerning my work ethic you are an idiot.
I had no interest working for them after that and have gone on to have a great and prosperous career despite her and her "close personal friend."
One of the most unprofessional people I have ever spoken to and I have never forgotten the interaction.

So 8:55? Your comment still doesn't negate the fact, that if the UW wasn't spending so much on the national level they could be giving more to the local chapters.
It's foolish to have to pay them a "fee." Sounds more like a nitwit than an angel. An angel is working hands on in a soup kitchen or a food pantry and not helping to line the pockets of an organization who gives very little back to the local communities.
