The grassroots uprising against Obamatrade dealt a blow to the corporatist establishment of Washington on Friday. More than 300 members from both parties voted to stop Obama’s globalist agenda.
But like a crack fiend who can’t give up the pipe that’s killing him, GOP leadership is vowing to stage another vote next week to bring Obamatrade back from the grave even if it means destroying the party and their own careers.
“Leadership” dare not betray its K Street paymasters.
But the rank-and-file are having none of it. Voters are outraged that the politicians who said “Elect me and I will stand up to Obama” betrayed them and voted to give the president even more power.
There is no question that Obamatrade will be an issue in next year’s elections. Rep. Steve Palazzo, R-Miss., is already under fire for supporting Obamatrade. After Palazzo waffled on opposing Obamatrade, conservative state Sen. Michael Watson blasted him.
“Why would any Republican vote to give President Obama more authority when we know what he’s done with executive actions and abuse of power?” Watson asked, according to Breitbart. Palazzo was forced to grovel before angry constituents after voting to give Boehner another term as speaker earlier this year. His Obamatrade vote could be the straw that breaks his jelly-like spine.
Leadership reassured members they had nothing to fear from supporting Obamatrade because they have overwhelmingly Republican districts. But there is no safe district for someone who betrays their country. Palazzo and others could well find their Obamatrade votes sparking a primary challenge.
Primaries are unpredictable because they are low turnout elections. A few thousand, even a few hundred, motivated voters can end the career of the most senior entrenched incumbent. And an ample campaign war chest does not guarantee an incumbent’s re-election. Former Majority Leader Eric Cantor outspent Dave Brat 25-to-1. Dave is now known as Rep. Brat – and he opposes Obamatrade.
The politics of Obamatrade are poisonous. Poll after poll shows a majority of Americans across the political spectrum opposes these phony “free trade” deals – and conservatives oppose them in even greater numbers than Democrats.
