IRS Scam Alert Advisory

Dover-Delaware State Police is providing a Scam Alert Advisory.  This is a general alert which covers any part of the State of Delaware.

The Delaware State Police have received numerous complaint from citizens in Sussex County today concerning an automated phone call from the IRS .  The scam involves a person claiming they work for the IRS claiming the victim owes money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly.  If the victim refuses, they are threatened with arrest, deportation, or suspension of driver's license, amongst other things.

Note that the IRS will never:
  1. Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill
  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe
  3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
  5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

**This information was provided through the IRS website located at:http://www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts**

Many of these scams are difficult to investigate.  They will target persons of all age groups.  Delaware State Police is asking citizens to remember the tips previously mentioned in order to not become a victim of one of these scam artists.

The message I received stated that I was being sued by the IRS,but the number was "unknown" on the caller ID.There were contact numbers included with the printed voicemail,so I forwarded the printed call to the IRS.Let them deal with it.
