STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION BEGINS MANDATORY HEADLIGHT USE ON US 50 IN WICOMICO AND WORCESTER COUNTIES

(May 20, 2015) --- To enhance safety for the estimated 28,000 to 36,000 motorists on US 50 between US 13 in Wicomico County and MD 90 in Worcester County, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is requiring 24-hour headlight use for all vehicles. SHA recently installed signs that will alert drivers to turn on headlights when traveling the corridor beginning Thursday, May 21.

“There have been tragic crashes along this corridor during the last decade. The mandatory headlight use will improve visibility of vehicles for drivers traveling the opposite direction,” said District Engineer Donnie Drewer. “The headlight use on MD 90 has made a difference and we expect the same positive outcome on this corridor.”

At the request of the community, SHA engineers evaluated this segment of US 50 and decided to designate it as a “safety improvement zone.” The designation meets national standards for daytime headlight use on highways.

That's funny BC I thought 90 had guard rails and warning strips and such that stopped people from getting into accidents....

Just another way to get into your pocket for the police to waste Time and stalk you down 50 and give you a ticket or worse...

If lights work so damn well, why is it not mandatory that all cars have them on all times in the state or the nation?

This is the stupidest idea I've heard in a long time.
Just another way to ticket sensible people. Highway robbery legalized.

Agreed. They can't lift the speed limit without a vote but can enforce this?

I guess this is the solution to stop the accidents in Pittsville. At least that is the excuse they will use. I also think it is another thing they will use to pull people over for.

Agree with all the above comments; wasn't there talk just a little while ago about raising speed limits?? Whatever became of that bill in Annapolis? It sounds to me like the two defeat themselves. Lights aren't going to help high speeds.

Does Governor Hogan approve this? So I am leaving Salisbury and traveling to Willards so this means I have to remember to turn my headlights on or big brother is going to issue me a citation/ticket! WTF!!

I use the auto setting on my headlights because it is a safety feature. If I go into a dark area the pop on automatically.

So now when ever I am on that part of 50 I have to now remember to turn off the auto setting and put them on manually and then remember to switch them back to auto.

This is ridiculous.

I can understand Rt. 90 because its a single lane highway each way. How does seeing oncoming traffic and a highway that doesn't have incoming traffic help in any way ?

I don't recall voting for this and its complete BS.

This is clearly just another reason to give the police an excuse to pull people over.
