Interesting, the title says HB 1019 while the document presented shows SB 532.....yes they are probably the same - but how about a little attention to detail - you guys are relied upon for professional journalism!

As a lifelong native of the eastern shore - I will say this about the chicken industry.

1. It is a dirty industry.
2. It stinks - (literally)
3. The independent grower is the farthest from the truth - as there is virtually no independence from the central monopolies.
4. A chicken grower is really a synonym for 'Indentured Slave'.

Finally, if Satterfield (paid lobbist) were really all that interested in Freedom for the Independent Growers - then - he wouldn't mind consenting to a truly 'free market' - whereby the growers would be allowed to take their flocks to a poultry auction - like was done in the 1960's. Anyone of that era will tell you that they got compensated more per pound than they presently do today.

In all - it is the Chicken Growers who are getting a raw deal.

The farmers are not able to "shop around" for one of the four chicken companies, because the building, retro-fitting and upgrading of "old" equipment, keeps most of them in debt to the company that they produce for. Banks do not bankroll most of these farms, the chicken companies and government do. Most new farms are being started by non-citizens, who are receiving government tax breaks and start up money from the federal government.
