Sheriff Joe Arpaio is known throughout the country for his tough, unorthodox methods of dealing with prison inmates and enforcing the borders.
Arpaio is the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. He’s been an outspoken advocate of tough immigration laws, including the controversial Arizona immigration law that was all but struck down by the Supreme Court in 2012.
After dozens of prison inmates desecrated the American flags that were hanging in their cells, Arpaio came up with a great punishment to keep them from doing it again: he put them on a diet of bread and water for a week.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, of Maricopa County, told the news agency that 38 inmates in six different jails were getting meals of bread and water twice daily – the punishment for destroying government property while in custody.
“These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells. Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel,” Arpaio said in a statement. “It’s a disgrace to those who have fought for our country.”
Arpaio said the punishment will last seven days; a second offense would bring 10 additional days of the bread-and-water diet.

It's not just a disgrace to those who fought for our country, it's a slap in the face of everyone who helped build and maintain it for over two centuries.
Good work, Sheriff. I wish that sheriffs around the country had the same sort of ideals and cajones to stick by them.
