WASHINGTON -- A law that stiffens penalties for certain acts of domestic violence has officially taken effect across Maryland starting Wednesday.
"I think this is a very important step," says John McCarthy, State's Attorney for Montgomery County.
Under the measure, a person convicted of committing domestic violence may have up to five extra years added to their sentence if the crime happened in front of a child.

WHERE is the Spousal Abuse Registry at ??? Heck if these people are so dangerous and abuse their spouses. Should there not be a registry where we all can go to and see if the person we are dating are our daughters and sons are dating are not spousal abusers ?? How many of these abusers go from victim to victim without nobody knowing it. If there was a spousal abuse registry then dating could be safer. Or is it that registries are really just a waste of time ??? You can be the judge of that. But would it not be nice to be able to go to a site and see if folks are spousal abusers and save others from these violent criminals.
