EASTON — A Goucher College poll released Wednesday, Oct. 8 found that a majority of Marylanders would support a one-year moratorium on blue crab harvesting.
The poll comes at a time when concern has risen over the decline in blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay.
After the slow start to crab season this past spring, Maryland officials said the female spawning population of crabs was just below the comfort, or threshold, level of 70 million Bay-wide, far away from the target of 215 million, according to the Bay winter dredge survey.
According to the poll, 62 percent of Maryland residents would support a one-year moratorium on blue crab harvesting, and 26 percent would oppose the year-long harvest ban.

You want to avoid a complete collapse of the species? Institute a ban.
You want to watch a complete collapse of the species? Follow the $$$$.
In a word, it's all bullcrap.
Simply make it illegal to EXPORT MD crabs. That's what CA did with Abalone. It's gotten to the point that you can't even buy MD crabs in OC. What's the point?
They must be unaware of the fact that sediment built up behind the Conowingo Dam is making the northern 50% of the Bay a dead zone that simply does not support sea life. The Hydroelectric company responsible wants a license renewal without correcting the problem.
Simply taking this on the chin, cutting the harvest, and allowing the sin to continue while blaming farmer runoff is a crime that needs to be dealt with immediately.
Please climb on board, and make the EPA blame the right perps here.
Leave our farmers alone!
624-You can buy MD crabs any time you want. I know crabbers, I know distributors. The vast majority(95%+) of MD crabs aren't exported. It's much cheaper to export crabs from the India ocean.
STOP THE WINTER DREDGING OF THE FEMALE CRABS IN THE WINTER IN VA. IN THE LOWER BAY.
They send the best to NY and we get the leftover which has been terrible this year. Best crabs I've ever had at red roost came from Texas.
Ban all types of fishing in the bay and tributaries. Ban crabbing , netting and all types of fishing. Ban the oysters catchers , ban hunting on the Bay.
Let it go back to it's origin .
The Bay and it's tributaries are a lost cause now. I've seen it go down hill for 75 years.
So, did they poll a hundred who were NOT watermen?
