Over 48M Americans Live in Poverty

Over 48 million Americans live in poverty, according to a special report by the Census Bureau Thursday. It provides an alternative look at the worst off people in the nation than the official numbers that come out in September.

Government programs such as food stamps do help some people, especially children, but even so 16% of American children are living in poverty, according to the supplemental report.

Better to live in poverty in the U.S. then be middle class in some other countries.

23,000 for a family of four is considered poverty. I think 23,000 for one person is poverty. Try making a house payment, buying groceries and keeping gas in the 20 year old car to go to the part-time job, because that is all you could get during the "recession" on 23,000, and see how many luxuries you can afford afterwards. And that is before Obama Care either taxes me for not signing up or I sign up and have to pay insurance premiums on top of all the luxuries I am currently enjoying. And no, I get no government assistance, no food stamps, no help at all.
But I do agree with 8:11. I would rather live here in poverty than anywhere else. Even though I am not very happy with the direction we are currently going. But that is a whole other story.

Many of our "poor" free and reduced lunch students have $300 beats headphones and smartphones. They are wearing over $1000 worth of stuff waiting in the lunch line to get their free lunch. Isn't America great.

Too many worthless unemployable people out there. How can a person do their job and man a cell phone at the same time.Maybe a bit of poverty will wake up the somebody inside of them, unless they prefer to stay worthless and poor.
