DENTON — The grandson of former Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes recently made an initial appearance in Caroline County Circuit Court on multiple charges of theft, obtaining property from a vulnerable adult and drug possession, after Maryland State Police alleged he stole more than $250,000 from Hughes over a roughly two-year period to support a daily heroin habit.
Police suspect Andrew Douglas White, 26, of Denton, is also part of a large drug trafficking ring distributing heroin, cocaine and other drugs throughout the Upper Shore. Since June, more than 20 other people in Maryland and Delaware have been indicted on charges related to the same ring.
Documents obtained in Caroline County Circuit Court show White was arraigned Aug. 27 in circuit court on 20 counts, including seven counts of theft between $10,000 and $100,000; eight counts of obtaining property from a vulnerable adult, defined as a person more than 68 years old; theft scheme of more than $100,000; conspiracy to distribute suboxone, a medication used to treat opioid dependence; conspiracy to distribute heroin; possession of heroin; and possession of a large amount of heroin, more than 28 grams.
