Troopers Investigate Crash near Dagsboro Involving a Stolen Car

Dagsboro, DE – Troopers are investigating a two vehicle crash that occurred mid-morning Tuesday near Dagsboro involving what was later reported as a stolen car.

Troopers responded to the intersection of DuPont Boulevard (US113) and Swamp Road around 10:00 a.m. after calls about a hit and run crash had just occurred. Preliminary investigation reveals a 2007 Honda Accord being operated by Gladys R. Handy, 82 of Ocean City, MD, was northbound on US113 approaching Swamp Road when a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu failed to yield the right of way as it was crossing from west to east on Swamp Road. The two vehicles collided in the intersection of the northbound lanes and the Malibu continued to drive eastbound on Swamp Road approximately two miles before stopping. There, the unknown operator abandoned the vehicle and fled in an unknown direction. The Honda Accord came to a stop in the northbound lanes.

Gladys Handy and her three adult female passengers were all properly restrained and transported to Beebe Medical Center where they were treated for undetermined injuries.

Troopers were assisted by Selbyville Police Department, Dagsboro Police Department, along with a state police K9 and aviation in searching for the operator of the Malibu for approximately an hour and a half without any results. While conducting the crash investigation, dispatchers in the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (9-1-1) were contacted by a 36 year old Dagsboro woman reporting that her 2006 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen from her residence on Gum Tree Road sometime between 1:00 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. This information matched the description of the vehicle that was involved in the collision.

The operator of the Malibu was described as a black male, approximately 30-35 years of age, 6’00” tall, 180 lbs., wearing a white shirt and tan pants.

If anyone has any information in reference to this incident, they are asked to contact Trooper First Class S. Devenney at 302-856-5850 ext. 333 or by utilizing the Delaware State Police Mobile Crime Tip Application available to download at:http://www.delaware.gov/apps/. This sounds like a false report.Easily confirmed if the prints in the Malibu match the prints of anyone living in the residence from which the stolen vehicle report was made.Cell phone records should also verify that a request for pickup was made, especially if the subject was a long distance from home. Not rocket science.

The prints in the vehicle could match every one of the people who legally drive the car! Finding prints that don't match and then matching them to someone who doesn't legally have access to the car is called 'police work'.

My point was to eliminate the household members first and then move on.

This (or used to) happens a lot in Selbyville. Hispanic, no insurance, no license, and illegal. It's been a few years since I lived there but this was a common occurence in the late 90's.
