Okay, so I make the 1958 average income x10 exactly, which is fairly average. Lets see how other things break down. I did some highlights!

New house: $119k (not impossible to find one today at this price, but wow is that comparatively expensive! Houses are much better though, but THAT much better? IDK.)
New car: $21k (easy)
Rent: $995/month (2br no problem)
Tuition: $10k (too bad, although SU is MUCH cheaper than this per year!)
Gas: $2.24 (all things considered, not too far off)
Milk: $10.01/gal (thank god)
Eggs: $2.28/dozen (right on)

Conclusion: This is inconclusive!

The price of food is actually cheaper in some ways but cost of college and gas and in some places a new home is way up.

How much was a cell phone bill in 1958? What did cable TV cost? How much was your monthly internet connection?

Seems like things haven't changed too much in relative terms. I guess we are better off than we thought we were.

This leaves out the 1958 tax brackets and rates (and there were many more brackets and some substantially higher rates).

When the Quadruplex video tape recorder was introduced in 1956 it cost $50,000.Only news networks and very large TV stations could afford one.Imagine how much money that was in 1956.

It was, as you stated, $50,000 in 1956.
