The automotive world appears to be stepping up its mobile app game.
Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, an association of more than 1,000 insurance companies, announced that Maryland drivers will be able to show law enforcement electronic proof of insurance on their smartphone or tablet.
The association anticipates the move will be convenient for drivers, who would no longer have to fumble around in their glove compartments for insurance documentation.
“It's another way to make it more convenient for drivers to provide that evidence on their phone,” said Bob Passmore, senior director of personal lines policy.

Sounds great until you realize that you have just handed your phone over a LEO that now has taken it back to his/her car. Wonder if they will look at your texts, email or pictures? Hmmm? I'll stick to the paper ins. card. Thanks.
I don't think there is a current law that requires drivers to show proof of coverage currently.
"License and insurance, please"
I have NEVER been asked for proof of insurance at a traffic stop. This is just a way the cops can take your smart phone or I-Pad back to their cruiser to "verify" the information, but use a device to download the entire contents of the device in mere seconds. You won't even know it was done.
Serving the public and all that, you know...
I've offered the insurance card, and was told to put it away; registration and license only.
Insurance info only comes in to play in a damage accident, and then only between drivers.
The SPD would give you a ticket before you could bring it up on your phone or any other device. They can't be bothered to wait the 2 minutes it takes to find it in your glove box.
if the automotive industry really want to make a positive impact then make new cars where all cell phone technology is disabled when the car is in gear! No more texting while driving accidents, no more distracted driving! Problem solved!!!
