Maryland wants you to drive safe in work zones

Throughout the past 14 months, nine people have died in Maryland work zones, including five highway workers.

At an event kicking off Maryland Work Zone Safety Awareness Month, state transportation officials, police and the wife of a highway worker killed in 2007 spoke about why drivers need to be safe in work zones.

"Every time I receive word that there's been another highway death, my heart just stops. I think of what the families are about to experience, the journey they're about to experience without their consent or control," says Laurie Moser.

Joe there is an accident involving a Wicomico Sheriffs vehicle on Hammond Street at Caroline Street. Three ambulances and a fire truck responded along with numerous Sheriff's SUVs and unmarked black cars. Happened about 3:15 PM or so.

Maybe they should slow some of the off duty and off call Police vehicles down before they ask others to do the same.

Elementary English class -- you drive safely and then you are safe. One doesn't not "drive safe."

This is a two way street. As a concerned human I am sure that if people are present on the side of the road, be it police, hwy workers, work release or just a kid walking I am aware of my speed and my proximity to those people. However I have seen first hand on numerous occasions from contracted or state employes breaking safety rules, unsafe acts and what I can only describe as tempting death.

Just like being a defensive driver is important when behind the wheel being attentive and aware while working on the side of the road is equally important.

Its your responsibility to cover your own ass and hopefully other people around you are doing the same thing. But stop acting like the public is the problem. I am sure there are many extenuating circumstances in each of these deaths. Who was drunk? Who got cut off? Who is simply not paying attention?

My point? Most issues are simply not caused by one group, they involve many. So to approach it from one angle is insulting.

Note the surveillance camera located in the median strip just south of the Leonards Pond Rt 13 bridges.Almost exactly where the car plowed into the guardrail after the driver had been shot.I have no idea why that camera is there, but it has been there for years.
