Tow Truck Operators Bid To Expand State's 'Move Over' Law

When your car is disabled and you're stranded on the side of the road, they are the ones who come to your aid.

But when Jamie Mertz answered such a call for a flat tire a few weeks ago, she was reminded of the risks involved in working a precious few feet from passing vehicles.

"[I] got out, got information, changed the tire, went back, put my items in the tool box, got in the truck and about 30 seconds later, I got hit," recalled Mertz.

Last week while traveling to Baltimore ironically to hire a lawyer to take care of some issues that arose when a Trooper pulled my Daughter for violating this very same law--

One of the swarming band of State Troopers who have chosen to infest the 2 mile area along RTE 50 around Hebron... decided to pull right out into traffic while his emergency lights were still blazing...I was already in the Left lane.. was within 10 yards of the Trooper..

What was I supposed to do??--slam on the brakes?..

This law is not well written..does not cover all angles and relies upon perfection from the Driver..the Trooper and the guy who will not yield and refuses to allow anybody to merge.. and anyone passing through Maryland hasn't a clue that it even exists (much less the long standing Law that says "Slower Traffic Keep Right" that I wish they did enforce)

I agree that safety is paramount.. I know many of our local Towing service owner-operators .. so maybe the Trooper needs to take control of the situation..get out of his car.. set up a lane closing and take responsibility of the situation..

They contact the call center who decides which Towing Company comes in a Police call.. but that would waste valuable time that could be spent writing more tickets ..

In my Daughter's case the Trooper embellished the exchange between them to rub salt in the wound because she never got the memo or saw the PSA the Overlords produced when passing this law..

Sadly... the Trooper's primary role has become literally Governor/Sheriff of Nottinghams Tax revenuers with a Badge

@6:13....THE MOVE OVER LAW EXISTS IN EVERY STATE INCLUDING WASHINGTON DC. NICE TRY

besides having the law, it should be common sense as a driver to keep as much distance between yourself and anything going on on the side of the road. your daughter was probably yakking away on her cell phone like she was the only person on the road.

yeah maybe she was I was not there

you care to explain the two fatalities involving Troopers rear ending Motorists on the Vienna Bridge?

I guess it's okay for them to be operating their seat mounted laptops ignoring their responsibilities as a driver and in this case we have statistics to prove negligence--not supposition from bloggers

Typical. Blame everything on everybody else. Your sweetheart daughter violated the law, let her deal with the consequences. End of story.
