DSP News Release: DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit Investigates Fatal Crash in Seaford

Location: Ross Station Road south of Herring Run Road, Seaford, DE

Date of Occurrence: Friday February 28, 2014 at approximately 5:10 p.m.

Resume: 
Seaford, DE- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred in Seaford.

The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. this afternoon as Herbert F. Cummings was operating a 2006 GMC Sierra southbound on Ross Station Road approaching Herring Run Road.  At the same time, John M. Russell Jr. was operating a 1999 Oldsmobile 88 northbound on Ross Station Roadjust south of Herring Run Road.  While attempting to negotiate a slight right curve in the roadway, the GMC Sierra crossed into the northbound lanes striking the Oldsmobile head-on.  As a result of the collision, both vehicles rotated in a clockwise manner and came to a stop in the northbound lane.

John M. Russell Jr., who was properly restrained, was removed from the scene and transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Herbert F. Cummings was also properly restrained and was transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.  Ross Station Road was closed for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
