JC Penny's announced today that it was closing 33 stores. Among those that are slated to close is the Salisbury Maryland - Centre of Salisbury Mall location.
All 33 store locations are listed on the following link:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/01/15/jc-penney/4495963/
This does not bode well for Salisbury's employment picture as it is already experiencing an alarming rate of layoffs. Last month - November - the US BLS reported that Wicomico County had 1,228 less in the workforce than it had the previous year. Also, the unemployment rated spiked up for the second month in a row from 7.4% in September to 8.1% in October and 8.2% in November.

Thanks OweBlama
I would like to be a fly on the wall at tomorrow's Chamber meeting at UMES.
I am sure that they are going to try and put as good a spin as possible - but hey - it is what it is.
I've got some more news - Sears is not doing well either. And as for Boscov's . . .they are on shaky ground also. And the GAP has already exited. My honest opinion - the whole town is in a state of DEPRESSION.
u gotta be a penny pincher to shop there terrible name
Also Gander Mountain, Kohls and numerous small stores in strip malls along Rt. 13
As Long as the obama peeps got there free sh/t who cares?
Hate to see them go. I agree with 6:54, Salisbury is death valley from an economic standpoint. It has been gradual and very evident. Unfortunately.
Another falls from gang activity.
J.C. Penney said Wednesday it will close 33 under performing stores.
That means 32 other cities/towns are in the same shape as Salisbury with job losses. Not just a local problem. The stores viewers mentioned as doing poorly are also under performing in other areas too.
Rents are up and sales are down.
I keep telling people Oscama is wiping out the middle class so there is Nothing but the Welfare class and the 1% that that pay the BILLS.....PAUL A
not to worry, our boy jimmy will save us. thanks sjd
In 10 years you will be shopping in the mall in laurel ,de. Tax free and many national chains. Goodbye Salisbury, The gangs can have a field day.
Also in my vision, Salisbury gay mayor still there running the bath house in the back of the Red light district superstore.
Dont worry its all part of the omallys balanced budget comedy tour...jimmies the opening act..a clown show.spooky aint it
Looks like 'bury will soon have two rubble piles!
Well it's good to see the finger pointing no nothing blog group is awake today. I have been posting about the sinking of the shore for sometime. Although I moved away last July I still visit the blog to see how the shore is fairing. Jc penny has been in a tail spin for years so today's news isn't a shock. The shores decline has been ongoing for decades and now it's become to late to fix. The loss of big companies and the bypass, a brilliant idea NOT. The economy in this country is as bad as you folks are being led to think. Just look at populated areas... Good jobs, progress, ect....sign spinners in our new town make 12-15$ an hour!!! The shore is a beautiful place to visit but no longer to live. But even to visit run down, unkept, shore towns is no longer fun....
Here is an idea go picket in front of the mayors house.
The Bury will be Buried.
Blame clinton unions and NAFTA and GNAT treaties..remember the great sucking sound ..it started at that point....garment industry died..and factories all moved..
Detroitbury - another liberal democrat success story. Don't create jobs, demonize the employers and crush them with Obamacare, then keep on extending unemployment benefits forever. This formula is guaranteed success for democratic politicians everywhere.
But watch, the majority of the Wicomico County Voters will re-elect Rick Pollitt AGAIN.
Oh, you may not vote for Rick but like Jimmy, he'll get the majority of votes just like he did over Ollinger.
Liberals LOVE electronic voting machines.
Oh, Rick, how many jobs have you brought to Wicomico County? Let's see, your losing around 1,200 jobs a month on average. We'll wait for your response.
What's really upsetting is Paul's pizza closed on Rt12.
Paul's Pizza is moving to where Maynies used to be on College Av
I heard Red Lobster is next
"The economy in this country is as bad as you folks are being led to think. Just look at populated areas... Good jobs, progress, ect....sign spinners in our new town make 12-15$ an hour!!!" I think you are trying to say something worth reading here. But, this gibberish is almost indecipherable. Where' exactly, are 'sign spinners' making $15, and what the h*** is a sign spinner?
Boscvs, Sears and Macys will be next
What you all fail to realize is that this isn't going to get better. It's going to get much worse as time goes on. You can't make companies come to the shore, to be honest I can't think of a good reason they would on their own.
Toys r us I hear is closing this summer
Mall associations nationwide refuse to negotiate rent/lease amounts.Retail operations dare not even ask,but a little compromise on the part of the property owners couldn't hurt if it meant possibly keeping a tenant.I don't understand the national mentality that refuses to budge on the rent price issue.
About this time Annie should chime in on what a splendid idea jacking the minimum wage is! Not!
I heard Obama is going to buy Toys R Us and rename it We Be Toys.
A sign spinner stands on a street corner holding a sign ad advertising a business. Down here in Naples FL they get paid 12-15$ an hour.
Also heard the Hyatt Resort may be leaving Cambridge due to lack of support from the community.
650am, The Hyatt resort does not market to the residents of Cambridge. It's because THEY ALREADY LIVE HERE!!!!
Wow.
And, yes, 822pm, but at least one will be asbestos free!
There is a reason the recent Centre of Salisbury Mall was sold.
The one corporation is selling to another corporation to probably limit its exposure to all of the anticipated closure announcements.
I'm telling you - it is coming.
While Wicomico county continues to hemorrhage jobs, the political fiddlers just keep fiddling.
Off with their heads!
Stop it, I said stop it now, you ungrateful salisburians! Rick went to China just six months ago to drum up financial activity! Jimmie is pushing for the downtown district into a new revival! As to the gangs you speak of, at least they frequent the mall.
toys r us is NOT closing
IS!
I'd call it right sizing. JC Penney can not compete with the likes of Walmart, Sears, Boscovs, Macy's, Target, Kohls, the outlets and the likes. Survival of the fittest and JC Penney lost.
Also Joe, you continue to claim Wicomico County is losing around 1200 jobs a month, but the post claims job losses are 1200 fewer from this time last year. Still not good, but 1200 losses a years is much different than 1200 losses a month.
anonymous 10:40, you clearly haven't been following our monthly articles.
Good riddance! That store sucks.
Haven’t been to JC Penny's in years. Actually I don't go to the mall much except for movies. Sorry to hear about them closing but as the article said it is country wide. Obama and the Democrats are continuing to destroy our economy and JC Pennys is just one more victim.
Anyone know where to s hop for big & tall other than penny's?
It's funny the people on here saying that Boscov's will be next. Penny's did about 7 -8 million a year at their Salisbury location, Boscov's does over 20. Penny's is bigger nationally, obviously, but in Salisbury? It's not even in the same league. Macy's and Sears do almost twice as much as Penny's annually as well. To blame the closings on anything other than the poor decisions by their CEO is laughable.
Penny's is going, seats, macys, and boscovs aren't far behind. The area can't support a mall much less anything else. The ship is sinking and there isn't much left. The issues are real folks it's time to come up with a plan......
Whats going on with the burger king on Rt 50 E side?

Your comment just goes to show that you have no grasp of what is really going on and that JCP was closing regardless of what MW was.
A few years back JCP threw a huge marketing campaign and changed their pricing strategy and it did not work. It was touted as their lowest price, no sales, no coupons. The price is what it is. Sales plummeted and they ousted the CEO and brought back the old guy.
He could not turn it around and now they are closing under performing stores.
I also see you were commenting very late at night after your usual evening bellied up to the bar.
From your comment I can see you killed a few brain cells.
Joe if I'm not mistaken it was only about a year ago you posted an article about JC Penneys pushing the gay and lesbian agenda. This might just be back lash from a bad marketing standpoint .
In 2012, JC Penney's sales plummeted 25%, even as its measured media spending jumped 14% to $504 million.
Mr. Johnson has acknowledged that marketing missteps such as sending customers less mail and failing to communicate the new everyday-low-pricing strategy contributed to the company's plunging sales.
It started in 2011 when the company hired Ellen DeGeneres, a vocal proponent of same-sex "marriage" as its spokesperson.
Then, on Mothers' Day, the company shocked customers with a blatant endorsement of homosexuality in an ad that featured two moms--followed by a two-dads ad for Fathers' Day.
Coupled with an overhaul of the stores' pricing system, the stock never recovered.
Like I said elsewhere - November is coming - your next (maybe last) chance to vote to take back our country!
Take back our country? It's now a choice of evil and the lesser of two evils. Both parties are two sides on one coin. The only way to take back our country is to have a second American Revolution or we will end up in another Civil War. Nothing will get done until we get the current establishment career politicians out of office. They all have been bought and sold by the corporations and special interest. Unless things change, it will be more of the same.
I would not be surprised to see Sears and Boscovs close to. Sears has announced another record loss, and they could go any day now.
I noticed Dairy Queen has also closed, and McDonalds to.
I have never seen a McDonalds close period . . .so I know that the Centre of Salisbury Mall must be hurting.
If my recollection is correct, I went into GAP a few months ago - and noticed that they have close also. So things are not pretty in and around Salisbury.
"Ken Nisch, chairman of JGA retail consultants, says many chains are eliminating stores in sparsely visited malls."
Meaning that there are few people visiting this mall.
It has been said over and over again, that you have to bring something other than MW retail into the community. Only so many stores can be supported. You will have nothing but a revolving door on staff and stores opening and closing.
Are there any readers that know how many employees JC Penny employes at the Salisbury store.
I am curious as to how many people might be effected.
Another gang hangout.
Annie, from 1:21 AM
Thanks for taking the bait.
Aside from your ad hominem insults you actually touched on some of the substance of the matter driving the local Penney’s closure, and the situation other retailers especially and other employers generally are faced with: No customers = no cash flow = fewer jobs and eventually no jobs.
Your earlier cheerleading for a massive % increase in the MW would only aggravate the situation for affected employers and employees.
You’re correct that Penney’s was in a stall and hired a guy from Apple to run the operation. His rapidly sprung marketing moves immediately alienated the traditional customer base with a concentration on both controversial social themes and radical changes in pricing and merchandise. Most businesses try to hang onto current customers while prospecting for new ones; his strategy rapidly failed in both dimensions and he was gone in a jiffy. (Oddly, he’d been a big wheel at Target before taking a long bite of the Apple).
The Centre has been open long enough (1990) that many merchants will be making decisions on lease renewals; it got a lot of initial impetus because some Salisbury Mall merchants didn’t renew and signed up for the newer location. Salisbury Mall was mainly a ghost town in its final years.
Regarding your ad hominem conjecture: When I’m working on a project I stick with it; sometimes the hour is late before I check SBY News; I may or may not offer a comment depending upon the topic. You may take issue with my views but they’re not distorted by anything stronger than coffee. Apology accepted.
