this will become another disaster! This will eventually become Section 8 housing and those $350 per month apts will now cost the taxpayer $1500 per month!
anonymous 8:44, and what do you think will happen to the housing Ireton wants to put on the parking lots Downtown?
Just across the River it took them at least 6 years to get 50% occupied in those condos and they had to give them away.
Now, you tell me, (all of you) do you think the market is BETTER now, or was it better 6 years ago!
Yeah, it will all be section 8 type of housing and those who buy in early will get completely screwed, just like the other condo project from years ago.
Hmm...on the dirty river in the ghetto. No thanks!
8:50 Agreed... What a view!
That's one of the scariest parts of town. I'd never want to live there.
For anything like this to be successful, it would require substantial population and surrounding financial health..neither of which exists here in the tri-county area including the City of Salisbury.
I would like to know of any project as this (that has similar demographics to our area) that is successful.
ok so the previous developer took a run down piece of land and tried to develope it and failed so now we have awoorse situation which is used as housing for the homeless, so a new developer decided to take a risk and he will develope it into something. yes he is using some government funding but at least he is trying something. so now he needs to finish and produce something better than what is already there and hopefully he will make some money and take care of it. if he takes care of it hopefully it will provide a benefit to the community. this is what they call capitalism, it was founded on risk takers and those risk takers deserve to make money. i hope he makes a lot of money because then maybe others will follow his direction and they will improve the area of town that you are all complaining about.
Good Luck with this 'project'
Yep and obviously the moron builder didn't do his homework on the Guetto area
Who in the heck came up with the far out idea of trying to make downtown Salisbury an arts district.Riversedge is going to be another failed project. Fake Day and the worthless city council the homosexual pansy mayor clearly have no idea of what direction to take the downtown area. Selling off buildings for half of the value clearly shows a lake of leadership. But this is what some people voted for. If Joe had mayor Salisbury would have been taken into a new direction
The owner should have done his Homework.
Because the VOTERS keep electing people who have NO business background, all too often Salisbury is experiencing FAILED projects and then they're left with a desperate situation. Then your elected officials do just about anything to get out of the bind.
This goes back to the Barrie Tilghman and Mike Dunn days, as does the old Mall and other failed projects.
YOU have to encourage good honest people who have a business background to run for office.
I tried. I did my best and for whatever reason it didn't happen.
Until YOU start holding your elected officials accountable and vote them OUT, things will never change.
Again, you have to look at legislators who create new laws like they did in the last election. A TIE in the primary means that all THREE people go to the General Election. Now, do you REALLY think Jackson and Polk turned the EXACT same number of votes, or was it just CONVENIENT that pulling Jackson's and Polk's votes together assured a win for Shields. HELLO people!
Get it together people. Salisbury could be an incredible canvas but YOU have to get out and VOTE.
I'll add. What has Jake Day, Jim Ireton, Rick Pollitt and other elected officials done to bring JOBS to Salisbury, aside from fast food type businesses?
I see the spending, the pay increases, the giveaways of projects like this one and the Downtown Parking Lots, EDU's, the old Fire Station and so forth.
We have to BUILD economic development and deliver good paying jobs before we continue to watch ALL of these City and County Council Meetings where they're voting to SPEND all the time.
Where are you hearing about REDUCTIONS? Come on people, it's NOT rocket science.
I may be wrong, but this company develops apartments not condos. They appear to be strongly affiliated with Habitat America (not to be confused w/Habitat for America) who "specializes" in "quality apartments" at a "good value" all code phrases for Section 8, renters assistance, the projects or whatever else someone chooses to call them. Project from start to finish and then there on government subsidized. If this is cause for a "celebration" in Sby then the officials need to hang their heads in shame because this is proof they are nothing more than a bunch of losers. Anyone "proud" of this has very low standards. Day was touted as being some kind of brilliant urban planner and this is what they have settled for?????
When this fails as a "studio for the arts" just make sure Sby News is geared up to smash it, rub it, smear it and grind it into the faces of all those who are touting this. Keep record of all crime occurring here and shout the "I told you so's" from the rooftops. No more civility! Name names and don't let up on them. They have used civility against us. Hold them accountable at all costs.
this project has absolutely nothing to do with the current or the last city council except that the developer had to get their "permission" it is all about a private citizen taking risks. if Day or anyone other politician wants to take credit for it see that for what it is. We need MORE people to take this kind of risk to create MORE local jobs. that is what this oproject is doing. the land across the river has been sold and someone is going to create more jobs building i believe student housing. good for them. the council or any opther politician is not going to create jobs. we complain about unemployment, ebt cards, etc. well this developer is creating real jobs at his risk and i hope he makes a ton of money because then he and others will do it again. Wake up folks and stop your complaining. support this project
Who in their right mind will want to pay to live next to a shipyard next door? What bank would fund such a project or is it tax funded grants?
9am and 11:15 am, you must be affiliated with the project.
12:52 no i am not affiliated with the project but i am a builder who has suffered for the past 5 years and i am happy to see some progress. i have a lot of developer friends who have also suffered and before you start calling us greedy we have kept the doors open and paid the bills keeping the few workers we can afford with a steady paycheck. we don't have pension plans and we pay our health insurance bills. if you look at statistics it is the building industry that has taken the biggest hit during the last 5 years and personally i am sick of it. we want to build buildings and work hard at it instead of wondering if we can make payroll. this developer made it through all the red tape this government has put upon us so good for him.
1137-Yeah...it's the shipyard you don't want to live next to, right? lol
That's all well and good 1:15 but construction jobs are really nothing more than temporary fixes. Good solid jobs are what is needed, which in turn trickles down into all sectors including construction.
11:19-You are correct. The council did nothing which is par for course. Did any of them get off their butts and at least make an attempt to get something like a smaller sized manufacturing company or a distribution center type of thing to move in which would have been something beneficial? No. This is why Sby is a wreck. Overrun with poverty and crime, foreclosures, etc. Council does nothing and it shows!
Just pick a nice, sunny day M-F and take a walk Downtown. Look at all the Art galleries and stores. Now try the door.
Oh, it's locked? Nobody there? Really?
We must need more artists to make more of this stuff so we can fill up the other empty storefronts! It will give the illusion that downtown is filling up!
Sorry All. I can't come to the kickoff at 12:00. I'll be working so I can pay for your section 8 housing.
Great, waterfront subsidized housing. Great planning. Is rap an "ART"? Should be easy to fill with artists.
8:54-It is scary. There should be a Halloween Walk Down Fitzwater Street each year. The residents there won't have to do anything different.Just be themselves.
To those praising this as capitalism, no it isn't. These guys would not have developed it without huge government subsidies.
Oddly enough, I think it could be artist housing, but I don't think these guys are going to try at all to make that work. I think they just blew smoke up someone's behind.
The project is now complete and it's gorgeous! Unfortunately not everyone can afford to live in upscale homes. Yeah the area is a little rough but home is what you make it. And to say that there should be a Halloween walk and the residents just have to be themselves is ignorant. I hope this property does great to prove you all wrong. Have a blessed day
should Relook at this Joe. The place is wonderful. But the management is run by Bullies. Liberals that want nothing but complete control over the occupants and if they dont comply are threatened with eviction. Most don't realize the threat is empty and comply.
WILDMAN.
