Fireboat still enroute to Ocean City for kitchen fire on Thursday. Delayed at Waw.

OK... I don't know anything bout the local fire dept BUT if they function like government on the state level they live from one year to the next by their own fiscal calendar. I was given X amount of money to spend in that year and if I didn't spend the amount I was allocated in that time span...I not only lost that money for the year but my budget for future years was cut by that amount. If I wanted to keep that budget I had to spend that amount every year (if we needed things or not) to be certain that we would have that money available in years to come. SO... if you are allotted so many pieces of fire equipment AND it must show use and mileage or you would lose equipment in the future.. I don't blame them for using this equipmewnt at every possible excuse. It goes about every financial thing I learned while growing up and while in college but it is the way of the REAL WORLD economics. So... I can't really say anything bad about the use of equipment because if and when we need a new (anything) and we have not show the need locally...then we are SOL. Who knows when that equipment would be in the budget again....and one thing we know for certain is that cities increase in size and need as time goes by. Just a thought.

No doubt a post from either a non-taxpayer, member of the Salisbury Fire Department, person with an empty bank account, or all of the aforementioned. Spend it if you don't even need it. If you don't spend it for essential purchases and have a surplus, it should go back into the general fund so that in the following year the budget can be reduced and the TAXPAYERS have some relief.
SFD bought a "tower" fire truck that never gets on the street at a cost of over one million $$$ to the citizens. It is a play toy for the volunteers at station 16.It has more miles on it from driving from the factory to Salisbury than on actual fire calls.SFD has three ladder trucks (including the tower). The ISO, an insurance rating organization that sets fire insurance rates for a community, states that Salisbury only needs to provide one ladder truck. Why do we need 3 ladder trucks, 5 fire engines, 10 chiefs cars, 2 fireboats, a "light unit", and assorted other vehicles to a department that runs at the most 100 fire calls a year? If the ambulance needs assistance why can't a couple people get in a pickup truck and respond? Or why can't a couple of the chiefs at Co. 16 get in one of the chiefs cars and go? If you need another ladder truck call Hebron or Delmar. If you need additional resources beyond a first alarm assignment, it is proven that you have already lost the building. Food for thought.Food- Wawa,Giant, Subway, gotta get them flat spots out.

The Tower seldom gets used because the are few volunteers who respond back. It cant leave without a driver with special training and they have few of those. The only time it responds is with the paid firemen usually. Once again your facts are incorrect. For the record the fire department turned back in several thousand dollars unused in its budget. Good fiscal management.

5:23 YES it should go back in the budget but what I was trying to point out is that it doesn't. My personal life has nothing to do with what government does with its money and as I already stated, I'm not involved with any fire department and I do not know how their budget runs. I, for one, think that spending money you don't have is simply crazy. I think we were in agreement on that point but personal attacks are not my style.

I found out from a firefighter in the Salisbury Fire Department that Rick Hoppes bought $5,000 in cleaning supplies and paper products at the end of last fiscal year just so they wouldn't have to turn that money back in. I heard it was hidden at the distributor and delivered in batches periodically so that it wouldn't be obvious. Is this the person that is a good steward of our tax dollars! He should have been fired, but instead they furlough police officers and want to raise taxes for pay raises.

Furloughed Police Officers? Huh?!?
That's the one department in the city, that didn't receive furlough's and on top of it, is the only department in the city to receive raises in the past 6 years. So with that being said, get your facts straight! Not one other city department received raises. Public Works, Neighborhood services, Fire Dept., etc. are making less now than what they were 6 years ago, due to insurance costs rising and no cost of living adjustments.
