Study: Maryland Has Some of the Worst Roads in the Country

A national think tank recently ranked Maryland the tenth worst state for well-conditioned and and cost-effective state-owned roadways, but the Maryland State Highway Administration wants to set the record straight.

The Reason Foundation’s annual highway report is based on data from 2009, the most recent year with full spending statistics available.

In the report, Maryland was ranked 40th among all states in overall highway performance and efficiency, which is an improvement from 43rd in 2008.

Very poor in efficiency, but I think the highways are very good compared to our neighbors. New Jersey and Pennsylvania are terrible, and Delaware isn't much better. You almost need all terrain tires to drive the PC and NJ turnpikes.

I agree 2:13 what was the criteria for this study? I will take Marylands over many states.

Delaware? I lived in Maryland for 60 years Roads were awful. Now that I'm in Delaware, it seems that there is so much road improvement going on that it's almost a nuisance. I don't want to go back though.

At least 30 years ago, the moving van companies were making comments on the horrible highways and roads in the state of Maryland. Those drivers travel all over the country, they would know.

In the late 90's, Maryland's roads were pretty awesome. Now you have potholes on US Highways and Interstates where people are traveling at high rates of speed.
