Cincinnati-based Kroger will pay $2.44 billion for the stores spread throughout the southeast and mid-Atlantic, according to the Associated Press. Harris Teeter has a heavy presence in the Washington area, including stores in Manassas, Woodbridge, Bristow and Gainesville.
"This is a financially and strategically compelling transaction and a unique opportunity for our shareholders and associates," Kroger chairman and CEO David Dillon said in a news release.

HT can shove it! Apparently we here in the bury is to dumm and und ejacated for them to build a store here.
HT will shove it. Shove over 2 billion in their bank acct.The better stores and other services will not build here because most of the population will not appreciate the finer things in life.
A 12 pack and a bushel of crabs and most are happy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But gourmet foods in this area are a waste on the people, except for maybe in Rehoboth. That's an odd lot over there anyway.
So keep going to Walmart and be glad you can still eat.

If you are that big of a fan of HT you can drive to Selbyville to shop at one. It's a nice store but some won't want to drive that far.
I drive to Annapolis once a month to shop at Trader Joes. There is not much to really choose from here in Salisbury or the surrounding area. It's either Giant, Food Lion, or disgusting Walmart with their rotten produce! When I go to Trade Joes, I am told that I am one of many to shop there from the Shore. We have also started shopping at Whole Foods as well. It's a hassle to have to bring a cooler, but the selection and choice are worth it! Prices are lower as well because they don't have to truck it over to the shore.
HT is no different than any other grocery store that's already in Salisbury. I've been shopping there for 15 yrs because they were the closest to me while living in Northern VA. There is not a thing unique about HT. On the other hand Whole Foods and TJ's do offer uniqueness.
I personally would love to see a Wegmans go in Salisbury.

I live a hop skip and a jump from the HT in Selbyville and I agree it's nothing special. It's just another grocery store. I shop there because it's close.
What I would like to see in Salisbury is a Byler's. It's a bulk, bent and dent/off brand (made in USA) store that also sells local produce. They are located in Dover and Harrington. I drive up there (w/a cooler) several times a year and always at the holidays because the prices on the bulk nuts and other cookie ingredients can not be beat.
People just don't get it.....Corporations just don't "open stores" there is so much planning and back end dealing that if a certain location doesn't meet the criteria they don't build.....We have NO economic base to build on in Salisbury! There are no big employers here anymore and the only jobs coming to town are part-time jobs.....Cant open a champagne shop where people only make Mad Dog 20/20 wadges!
6:50 I live in west ocean city and bring my cooler to the Giant in Salisbury because our Super Fresh and Food Lion are horrible. I think I might have to follow your lead and head to Annapolis once a month!
Good heavens folks, it's just food. How many different types do you need. You buy it, you eat it, then you crap it out! It's not a big deal.
Huge mistake.Puff and stuff will not survive the next decade.People will need to eat and wherever they can aquire the basics will do.Atmosphere will no longer apply,nor will an enormous selection.Dog eat dog will be the rule of the day.The more basic the better.10:35 couldn't have said it better.
I don't get what the big deal is with Harris Teeter either. They sell the same old stuff. Dole organics and other big corps who jumped on the organic bandwagon and who lobbied the feds to lower the standards on organics so you really aren't eating much of anything special. For real true organics buy directly from a local farm you trust.
Same with their organic meats. 99.9% of their seafood is imported from some 3rd world country same as all the other stores.
Just the idea that SBY didn't suit for their precious store turns me off.One of the commenters said a HT was in Selbyville.That makes me wonder if something other than our average income level was responsible.Maybe the same people who have held everything else up also kept HT away from SBY.
