President Obama travels to New Jersey on Tuesday for a progress report on the state's recovery from Superstorm Sandy that on the surface appears remarkable but which hides deep and lingering pain.
Sandy caused about $40 billion worth of damage when it wrecked the Jersey shore in October, killing dozens of people, forcing thousands of residents to flee and destroying nearly 350,000 homes.
Much of the tourist-magnet shoreline itself raced back to business in time to open for the Memorial Day holiday Monday. But you don't have to go far to find long-lasting scars that will take years to heal.

Probably going there to look for Snookie!
If people could learn to pitch in and help each other things would go a lot smoother. This inability to unite & help themselves rebuild typifies the Jersey mentality.Millions of people who have been so dependent on the government for so many years have been revealed by this disaster.Adults who can't even drive a nail are bitching about why Obama hasn't stepped in with the wealth of our nation to help.
I'm told that Seaside Heights boardwalk is back. NJ icon for millions of people.
I guess this means that everything is OK now that the savior has arrived. Where are the whiners in the media on the governments inadequate response? Oh yeah-it's OK now because the regime is democrat. And where are all the locals crying out for government help? They don't cry because they are working people instead of the generational freeloaders you had in New Orleans.
Anon 10:03. The people of NJ have been working their butts off to rebuild. And for your knowledge of the "Jersey mentality", unless your from Jersey you don't know squat!!!!! Jersey people come together then they are needed unlike some other Good Old Boys network people.
12:34 Just an example of that "southern hospitality" talk all sweet to your face and trash anyone who isn't "from here" behind their back.
12:34 The same highway that brought you here can take you back anytime you wish to leave!
This is equivalent to an empty wrapper taking a wind fueled voyage to a landfill.
I suspect O'b is trying to raise his popularity by rubbing elbows with Christie...
Obama would rather be anywhere except the White House. If he was there, he might have to take responsibility for some of the curruption going on.
oh trust me after 8 years living in this area my family and i have had enough. the lack of any real progress, no real jobs...no walmart and target arent careers...this area hates tourists but sure like the money they spend here! you people here have the nerve to comment about new jersey notice seaside heights is up and running after real destruction!and crisfield is a ghost town.... oh and when you visit there you can find plenty of free parking, and a true family place...ocean city over the time span of 20 years has lost most if not all of that.maybe you locals should take a ride down there and count the vacancy signs on most of the hotels like i did this weekend!my family and i will be moving to florida in the next few weeks....they embrace newbies like family not come heres. They actually like tourists and good paying jobs are readily available, like Hertz the largest car rental company in the US moving their corporate headquarters to just north of naples...not maryland....companies dont come here, they look to leave....good luck to you all...but i can say the people in new jersey far out class most of you locals.....this area is simply a tourist trap nothing more, and as the true numbers show its losing that too.....
They must have build a new mini golf course
