Maciarello Makes Claim He Will Attempt To Get Stiffer Sentences For WCDC Assaults

Wicomico County States Attorney Matt Maciarello stated on WMDT that he is going to go after stiffer sentences on inmates assaulting the WCDC Staff.

However, (above) here is a case in which an inmate recently assaulted the staff. Her sentence, 10 days but here's the kicker. She got to spend them in jail on weekends. Nevertheless, it seems clear why.

I'll bet WMDT wishes they had this case in hand BEFORE they did the interview.

Are new units being built that we know nothing about? Such a mandate requires additional cell space any way you look at it.All of this hard core approach stuff sounds good, but honesty would sound better.Inadequate cell space equals lesser sentences and earlier release time for those already "in".There is no other way people.Any hard core stance on crime of any type WILL NOT WORK without the cell space to make it work.Duh.

Well one inmate had her luck run out. She is in DOC thanks to the States Attorneys office.

was matt the one who gave out the sentence? I've seen plenty of times where the police and prosecutors do their jobs only for the judge to release the criminals with a slap on the wrist!

They did not just "make a claim." They got a conviction and sent the inmate to serve time in the Division of Corrections.

i'm sorry - I know there is a lot of support for Mr. Maciarello on this blog and its comments but I for one do not think he has done a good job for Salisbury and this is another example of his failure. Those men and women who work at WCDC have one of the worst jobs and 9 times out of 10 they do it with honor and pride. There should be a zero policy against inmates who assault the staff and Mr. Maciarello should be leading this. Once again Joe it falls to you to bring this to the public's attention.

Ummm the SA can not sentence anyone... Judges do that

I've been in the court several times just to observe what's going on and if the prosecutor makes a sentencing recommendation the judge is usually inclined to accept and hand down that recommendation. A lot times the judge will even ask the prosecutors if they would like to recommend a sentence and most often they decline.
Also overcrowded prisons and detentions centers is not a problem in MD.

A prosecutor has to make their best judgment in each case. It's not overcrowding its moving a docket. There are not enough judges and court time to have a trial in every case. So a plea offer might be plead guilty to charge A and the prosecutor will defer to the court. This puts the decision in the judges hand. It's done in every court in every State in the USA. Without that tactic it would cost the taxpayers Trillions, yes Trillions to provide funding for a trial in every case. If the Defendant has 0 incentive to take a plea the defendant will not waive his right to a trial.

1:26 PM Seems some people post with knowledge and insert foot. Happens often as LEO is incapable of doing anything correctly according to readers here. The SA job is not as easily done as many infer.
