JOHN PICK ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE AFTER LONG TENURE

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. announces today that Salisbury City Administrator, John R. Pick, has announced his retirement from the City effective June 28, 2013. Pick has been City Administrator for eighteen and one-half years.

Among his many accomplishments, Pick cited the naming of the City as an All-America City in 2010 as one of his proudest moments. He has also introduced the Capital Improvement Planning process to the City, has helped improve the City’s financial condition, developed the Annexation Policy and procedures, assisted with the successful effort to continue rail service to businesses along the North Prong of the River, assisted with the development of the Performance Evaluation System currently used by the City, assisted with the development of the shared GIS system between the City and County, assisted with agreement with the County to televise City and County meetings, and assisted with the development of thousands of city ordinances.

Pick began his career with the City on January 23, 1995. Before coming to Salisbury he had served as City Manager of the City of Fort Madison, IA. Previous work experience included Assistant City Manager for the City of Jacksonville, NC; Town Manager for the Town of Hope Mills, NC, and Personnel Director for the City of Rocky Mount, NC. Pick holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of North Carolina and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Arizona. He is a credentialed manager through the International City–County Management Association. In 2000, he was elected President of the Maryland City County Managers Association.

After his retirement from the City of Salisbury, Pick will assume the responsibilities of the position of City Manager with the City of Northglenn, CO. “I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve the citizens of the City of Salisbury for the past eighteen and one-half years,” said Pick. While I am looking forward to the new challenges I will be facing in the future, I will greatly miss the many friendships and associations I have had in Salisbury, particularly with the tremendous employees who work for the City.”

“It is with a heavy heart that I accept John Pick’s leaving for Colorado. He has been a respected leader in the community and has been at the heart of the change from town to city that we have experienced over the past twenty years. Having served with the past three mayors of Salisbury, Mr. Pick has shown incredible flexibility, patience, and professionalism for each, and has served to keep our city on the beaten path to progress. It is on behalf of all of our citizens that I wish him, and his wife Vickie, the best in all they do as they start the next phase of their lives. Salisbury is a profoundly better place for having them here. The Pick’s will be missed,” said Mayor James Ireton, Jr.

Jim,

Key people are dropping like flies. It looks like there will be more going sooner rather than later. The house of cards is crashing down.

Yes Joe- You are much more honorable than John Pick. Good Riddance.

Moving to CO??? Where the men marry men and weed can be smoked legally..... What a dream....

the liberal

Don't you have to be with them for 20 years before you can retire? Why would someone leave if they were so close to being able to retire.

If the mayor can work with anyone as he claims, Joe, I think you would be a great asset to the citizens and I wish you would give it serious consideration.

I, for one, won't miss Pick.

YES Joe!

That's one way for Ireton to give Chambers that pay raise.

Looks, like he will be paid well at 133k

Pick was looking. Remember when he was in the running with some midwest city not long after Ireton got elected the first time?

The Public Works Director and City Manager looked for and found jobs. The question has to be asked why top level people are fleeing this administration?

Thank God he is so wishy washy and so ineffective, my dealings with him have been terrible. If anything he done he has held Salisbury back. Nothing but a useless obstructionist.
Good Ridence

Good bye. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

“It is with a heavy heart that I accept John Pick’s leaving for Colorado."

Jim Ireton did you forget it was John Pick and Lore Chambers that was supporting Bubba Comegys for Mayor? Did you forget that John Pick and Lore Chambers encouraged city department heads and employees to support Bubba Comegys? This proves you are an idiot to keep those morons around for more than 4 years. If you give Lore Chambers the position of City Administrator then you have lost your mind!

Joe, I'm sure Jimmy boy would look over your resume and hire you in a heartbeat! Oh, wait... NOT!

LOL!

He will look nationwide because nobody around here wants to work for the sorry arse! We all know him.

Maybe Barrie has a troll he could use...

Joe was planning to fire John, Lore and Teresa when he became Mayor. Now it has been taken care of. What's the big deal?

John pick was by far the best employee the city had. He is the glue that kept them together. Concern for the city once he retires......

757 Thanks for checking in John. Babs is next.

7:57 hahaha what a crock. I will say this about Pick, he was able to play close to the vest and serve radically different bosses over his career. That merits a measure of respect, but let's not make him into a saint.

Okay. Pick's gone. Downsize the Mayor's office. In fact, one more can go since one of the office people is set to be reclassified as some sort of press secretary. Get one good City Administrator, we don't need two...and, the way that Chambers has treated the public and her involvement in less than above board things like the Bricks makes her unsuitable in my mind. That would save a few pennies on the tax rate right there. Gardener was a disaster. Have Pollick present the public with a 12-month plan to right the ship and maybe she should be the one, but let us see what she has to offer before she is seriously considered. A national search is expensive and we've said that we want to promote from within. What about the other guy that left with Beauchamp. Is he qualified? I always heard they were both a great loss to the city. Downsize Public Works. Keep those employees who are hard working, pay them more and get rid of the rest. The taxpayers win, the good employees win. Barb Duncan could tell you how to restructure these departments, but Jim might not like the answer.

One thing that nit mentioned is that the city offered people eligible for retirement 25% of their salary in a lump sum check to retire. Curious how Pick didn't mention that in his interview with Jeremy Cox.

Good Riddance you piece of crap. You stabbed Ireton in the back and then Ireton turns around and kisses your butt. You are a lying 2 faced P.O.S. and I hope your new job fires you during your probationary period.

He didn't get the job because some of you idiots were calling and e-mailing them and giving reasons not to hire him. The best way to get rid of someone is to tell everyone how great he is.

Thanks John. Now go take your medicine.

They need to hire the guy they forced out of the fire department. I bet he knows the city and is smart enough to clean house. This city is a sinking ship and something needs to be done as soon as possible.

Anonymous said...

Look at his accomplishments. There's a lot of assisting, and no leading. Maybe next time we can get a leader and things will get better as a result.

When Ireton ran 4 years ago he promised many of his constituents he was going to get rid of the bad administration including John Pick, Lore Chambers and all the department heads. He allowed Chief Webster to go out on disability because he didn't have the balls to fire him. He promised Ernie Leatherbury and others the department head position and he failed. The city is failing under Ireton's leadership and he lied to all his friends and supporters. This last appointment to fire chief was proof that Ireton lied to the constituents and the fire department members. This next election cant get here fast enough.
