Residents have rejected a budget that included money for extra school security in the wake of the December school shootings, with town leaders suggesting the spending and required tax increases were a hard sell.
Voters on Tuesday turned down the $72 million school budget by 482 votes and rejected the $39 million town government budget by 62 votes. Nearly 4,500 residents voted on the plans, which would have represented an increase of more than 5 percent next fiscal year.
First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra said the killings of 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School had an impact on the vote, the first since the massacre.
"We're very fragile as a community," she said. "We've lost some of our confidence."

Just put up some "Gun Free Zone" signs, save some $$$ and every single criminal would walk up and say, "Can't bring my gun here!"
The NRA's offer to educate & train your existing teachers in concealed carry is still open, you should all consider that alternative. A lot less than $770k!
Not only do they want everyone's gun's gone - they want even less protection. They should have voted for less rent-subsidized housing and taken the resultant money to pay for the protection!
It is a hard thing to sell when people and families are already struggling to make payments now. You cant bash the people for voting no. Vote yes, taxes go up and more struggling to pay bills. The taxes are to high as it is and asking for more and tossing "Your kids safety is at risk" isnt the way. Say that it passed, kid safety is saved but will go hungry, dirty and torn clothing, health declines. Have to start at the top. WASHINGTON and their spending! They are there to help run this country,,not in the ground and NOT to get rich!
