Arrestee Shot As He Tries To Escape Police Custody

State Police are investigating after an arrestee was able to escape Baltimore City Police custody Monday morning.

Authorities say the arrestee was being brought into Central Booking in Baltimore around 11 a.m. when he managed to either escape the police wagon or run off as he was outside the wagon.

Mark Vernarelli with the Department of Public Safety and Corrections tells WBAL Radio the arrestee then took off towards the Eager Street gate and he was shot by a corrections officer guarding that area of the complex.

Police and Corrections Officers are held to a different standard when it comes to shooting subjects trying to escape custody. Corrections officers aren't required to ask why the subject is in custody. They aren't required to determine if the subject is armed. They are required to stop the escapee at all costs in order to protect the public. If that means shooting the escapee in the back, so be it.
