New Walk Smart Program Planned For Ocean City

OCEAN CITY – Following a sharp increase in pedestrian crashes last summer, a new Walk Smart campaign has been initiated to spread pedestrian safety awareness in Ocean City starting this summer.

On Tuesday afternoon, Karen Waggoner of the Maryland Highway Safety Office came before the Mayor and City Council to request permission for projects sent forward by the Ocean City Pedestrian Safety Committee (OCPSC).

Waggoner has been working with the committee that is made up of representatives of the State Highway Administration (SHA), Ocean City Public Works Department, the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, the Worcester County Health Department, area business owners and more.

These "officials" are clueless until they begin riding the buses. Fact is that they don't and never witness passenger behavior. It doesn't take a dummy to see that a passenger getting off a bus and dashing in front of it to cross the street is not a good ideal. OC, get your pundents to ride the bus first and SEE what needs to be corrected. I realize that many got new shiny company cars to drive around town this year but that doesn't help. In fact, I might be surprised that the new Town Manager has ever ridden the bus.

How much will the fine be for violating the summer "Walk Smart" police "campaign"? THAT'S the impetus for all this.....money.

25 mph on ALL O.C. streets in season.
Fixes the problem.
SAVES a lot of money.
AND, the money mercenary cops can still feel needed running radar.

As much as I hate to say it, I think it's time for 35 MPH on Coastal Highway ("The Six Lanes of Death"). SUMMER ONLY! May through September. Why do I hate to say it? Because I still miss the blinking yellows off-season. But something has to be done now. The deaths are extremely bad press for a resort town. People want to be safe.
How about this idea: Have WalMart sponsor the signs (and ads). It fits: "WALk sMART".
Just a thought...

What do you suggest as punishment for traffic violations? Jail or pay a fine that's your options. It's not the police's fault that these are the only 2 options. Police officers could care less about how much fines they bring since they see NOTHING of the amount. ZERO ZILCH NADA.

1131-How will that stop a stupid tourist from attempting to run across coastal highway when they shouldn't?

You can't fix stupid. Just scrape it off the pavement and don't hold up traffic too long.
