Members of Congress Call for GAO Investigation of Planned Parenthood

Led by Reps. Diane Black (R-TN) and Pete Olson (R-TX) and Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), 72 members of Congress are calling upon the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate the amount of taxpayer funding Planned Parenthood receives and how the funds are being used.

A letter signed by the legislators asks for information on all affiliates of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), International Planned Parenthood Federation, the Population Council, the Guttmacher Institute, Advocates for Youth, and the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS).

Last year, PPFA performed a record 333,964 abortions and reported a record $1.2 billion in revenue generated. Taxpayer funding of the organization reached $538.5 million, 45.2% of PPFA’s total annual budget in 2011-2012. The prior year, taxpayer funding amounted to $487.4 million.

Maybe if these elected officials spent more time figuring out how to compromise with their counterparts across the aisle and less time going after women's health services, something could actually get accomplished.

It's not women's health services its government funded abortions unless of course abortion is what u consider women's health services

You have to understand that Planned Parenthood will not (they could, but won't) exist without providing abortion services. You can't expect them to provide counseling, preventive care, treatment for STD's, contraception and general health care without doing abortions, now can you? After all, it says on their website that abortion is a safe and legal way to end pregnancy. And it OK because lots of women do it. In fact, 1 in three women have abortions in the US. However there is no acknowledgement that they exist on taxpayer dollars.

10:44 and 1:50, abortions do not occur on taxpayers dollars, unless it is a medical emergency. My best friend had to have one because she had cancer, and her insurance covered that ONLY because it was a medical emergency. For any other person, this procedure costs hundreds of dollars, out of their pocket. Now, let me ask you, what are you trying to argue? If a child is born, and the parents have to be on welfare, you complain. If the parents abort the child because they can't take care of the child, you complain. This is where planned parenthood offers birth control, and once again, you complain. I read recently that people believe birth control is a form of abortion every month. It is not, when the pill keeps the egg from being released from the ovaries. Bottom line, neither of these people complaining want to take care of someone else's child, but they can sure tell the if the person should have the child or not. It's a lose situation, and neither side wins.

Planned parenthood provides abortions. Have you checked on the amount of money they get from the government? That is money that comes from TAX PAYERS. So yes we are footing the bill. People need to be responsible for themselves. It is not my responsibility to provide you with birth control, abortions or anything else you use in your private life. If you are planning on having sex and don't want children be responsible and buy your own birth control. If you happen to get pregnant it is your responsibility to deal with it not mine. The key word is RESPONSIBILITY. Peoples lack of planning is not a crisis I should have to deal with.
