Maryland Bill Would Raise Tobacco Tax To $3 Per Pack

Maryland cigarette smokers would see the price per pack jump $1 and other tobacco users could see taxes more than triple under a proposal being considered by the state House of Delegates.

Maryland already has one of the highest cigarette taxes in the nation, and under a bill from Del. Eric Luedtke, D-Montgomery County, it would jump from $2 per pack to $3. The tax rate on other tobacco products would leap from 30 percent to 95 percent of their wholesale price.

By comparison, New York has the highest statewide cigarette tax at $4.35 per pack, and Virginia has the lowest at 30 cents per pack.

No problem. Buy cigs while getting alcohol and gas in DE or VA.

Never thought of it that way 9:33.
I wonder if the majority of U.S. smokers are middle-class and lower class citizens. If so, that's pretty pathetic that our lawmakers would prefer to tax those citizens.

Raise it to $10 per pack. Maybe people will quit killing themselves

I see no problem at all with this as long as the revenue goes directly to medical care/research

Those of you that think this is a good idea should stop and think.
How will you feel when the dumbocrats start taxing:
Donuts
Sodas
Beef Jerky
Energy drinks
Ice Cream
Any of those products could be said to cause health issues?
Shouldn't people have the right to choose what they want to do without some stupid dumbocrat deciding what's best?

You may cheer the cigaret tax until they start taxing what YOU like to consume, then it's too late.

5:25 yeah like the same way lottery money goes to education....NOT

What are the odds of ANY tax or fee going into the intended/stated account???
It will go towards rail transportation upgrades or highway improvements around Baltimore.

Why don't they just ban them from the state? Who's gonna buy them here when De. & Va. are so close. This is LOST REVENUE! IDIOTS at it again. Of course you will soon be able to smoke pot. Certainly it would be cheaper.

Maryland was bragging about gaining $43 million from Casinos in February alone. Where is all that money going?

I know smoking is not healthy but we don't over tax fatty foods and ice cream to that extent, fat increases the risk of stroke and heart attack the same as cigarettes. Charge extra tax for being so fat and lazy you can't get out of the car and you go through the drive thru?

What's next, a yearly weigh in and charge people by the pound that they are overweight?

They DO NOT give a crap about your "health" or "safety". But they are VERY concerned about getting more of our money. VERY concerned. Its ALL they do. Next year, it will something that YOU like. Too late to whine about it then.

I don't have a problem with raising the tax as I think more people will consider quitting if it hurts their pocketbook. People say "this hurts the poor" but so does smoking.

Bottom line is smoking is more "healthy" than what is being sold as "food" anymore. If lawmakers were serious about health they would demand food manufactures and processors label and/or completely stop with all the artificial chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, etc present in today's food supply.

I haven't bought alcohol or tobacco in MD for years! Delaware and VA are good places to shop. And, as long as it's cheaper on gas, I fill up every time I go.

Fixing the place up and putting it on the market now, and shopping for a new state.

When they start losing millions in revenue because people are buying elsewhere, they will have to come up with another scheme (tax or "fee") to support their compulsive spending habits. It's the typical liberal mindset-the only reason it hasn't worked is because we haven't done enough of it yet.

I dont smoke anyway. Jake it up!

The government will get this tax through because so many people are aganst smoking, but when does it stop. Look at history, does the Boston Tea Party remind you of anything, it was about the over taxing by government. This government needs to be downsized, too much money is being lost on the high officials giving themselves raises, good health plans and great retirement packages and the American people that work pay for it and have no say in it.
