Prince George's County Schools Considers Owning Student And Teachers' Work

An 8th grader's research paper, a kindergartener's drawing and a teacher's lesson plan would become the property of the Prince George's County Board of Education if a proposed copyright policy is approved.

The proposal says any work created for school or by using school materials would become property of the school board. Property includes staff work as well as student assignments completed inside and outside the classroom.

Lawrence Sung, an intellectual property rights lawyer and partner with BakerHostetler in D.C, says the legality of the proposal is questionable. He adds it's common for employers to own employee work, but in this case, students are not being paid for their work.

"We want the district to get the recognition ... not take their work," Jacobs says.

Recognition for what, doing your job and actually teaching? Most of us went on to become something in life and it wasnt due to our grade school teacher

Just another beginning of a govt entity taking over ownership of everything..."You didn't build that yourself, the govt LET you build it, so it belongs to the govt."

This is so stupid.

Some art shows, especially featuring work by high school students done outside the classroom, allow students to sell their works. How can all of their paintings and creations be owned by their school district?

Pass that, and the smart parents will take their smart kids out.

Idiots. You can get the recognition without stealing the child's rights.

Sickening.

Has ANYONE here actually SEEN the quality of work coming out of THAT school system? Those student are more proficient at gang fights, car theft, drug dealing, bullying, attacking "snitches", threatening and attacking teachers and dropping out in the 1oth grade than ANYTHING scholastic. And teenage pregancy. Trust me --- no one will buy what they want to "own"....I grew up in that area and watched PG County go from a middle and upper class enclave to a place where it ain't even safe to walk the street in front of your house IN THE DAYTIME. Just checking your mailbox is dangerous in PG County. But I guess the children of all those single mothers are now the epitomy of scholastic brilliance, effort and achievements. Lots of BS palques and awards. I'm sure that as soon as they hook up with the muslims, they can take over NASA and will colonize Europa in 10 years or less....
