Lawmakers Push Reform For Maryland Clean Water Fund

Local lawmakers continued their push to require water pollution fines to pay for environmental projects, even as the Maryland Department of the Environment remains opposed.

On Tuesday state Sen. Bryan Simonaire, R-Pasadena, pitched his bill to modify the Maryland Clean Water Fund so revenue generated from fines is used for water cleanup.

The bill is a response to a report in The Capital last summer that found more than half of the money in the Maryland Clean Water Fund is used for salaries and administrative expenses at the MDE.

"This is not how government is supposed to be run and this is not the intended purpose of the fund," Simonaire told his fellow lawmakers on the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee.
