Paid Sick Days?

Mired in the worst flu season in decades, Americans are demanding business owners give their workers paid sick days. According to a new survey by the consumer organization, ORC International, 57% of Americans say it is "very important or important" that restaurants provide their workers with paid sick days. This is common sense, after all, who wants sick people handling their food? Unfortunately, the United States of America is the only developed nation in the world that doesn't guarantee paid sick leave, holiday pay or paid vacation days. As a result, 90% of restaurant workers don't get paid sick time. The same is true of 79% of ALL food industry workers. According to a 2009 study by the CDC – as many as 5 million more Americans get the flu every year, because restaurants don't offer paid sick days to their workers. This is insanity. Enough with putting corporate profits ahead of the health of entire communities. Give workers what they've earned – a paid day off when they have the flu. With corporate profits as percentage of GDP higher than they've ever been before, Corporate America can easily afford it.

Maybe the president will put a surcharge (tax) on restaurant food so workers with little or no education can have the same benefits as those that invested time and money getting a degree that was necessary to get a job with benefits.

People are missing the point. We want someone with Norovirus to stay home from work. If a cook comes to work sick because he has no paid sick leave he is going to infect everyone that eats at the establishment. Paid sick leave would eliminate this from happening thus reducing the incidence of food-borne illness outbreaks.

IF a cook comes to work sick the employer should send them home!

11:43. I'm a restaurant worker so. 20% of bartenders have college degrees. Many waiters are either goin to college or have graduated an this economy still wait tables. I have a degree with a double major in marketing and management and a minor in communications. You sound like a customer who comes in and looks down on the people preparing and delivering your food. I don't get sick days nor do I expect them. I also don't complain since I make more money then the average person on Delmarva. I own a nice house and besides a mortgage I am debt free. Next time you go out I eat don't assume your server is uneducated unless you want them to assume you are a pompous ass

However, when you give employees paid sick time they always manage to take all the days. Why would they lose a paid day off?

You are the one that sounds like a pompous ass. 20%? Wow high rate there. I believe 11:43 said "workers with little or no education" I don't think they stated ALL food workers.

12:10. They just said workers with little or no education. The way it is stated implies they are referring to all. I would say 1 in 5 is a large number in regards to bartenders having a college degree. Also in this area I would say the percentage of servers that are college students or have degrees is well over 50%

As soon as you offer paid sick days employees are sick on Friday or Monday.

Maybe servers but this post is about restaurants. That includes places like Mcdonalds, Wendy's, Arbys etc. Do you really think the people working there have a college degree or are studying to get one? You point might be valid if we are talking about restaurants that have waiters but not all food restaurants. Should the people working at the fast rood also get paid sick days or just the ones that wait tables? If they get paid sick days shouldn't eveyone else or do you just expect the people to foot the bill for you even though they don't get sick days at their employer.

I said in my earlier post that I don't get sick days nor do I expect them. You can't really give servers sick days. When your hourly pay is $3 an hour + tips there is no real way to pay you for what you may have made

As an owner of a business with employees at one tine, I saw several employees take advantage of their sick days. Even though they were not sick, they would still call in sick especially towards the end of the year when their sick days expired if they did not use them. One more reason why I do not have employees.
