Jonathan Blazek, Snowplow Driver, Sues For 'Alcoholism Discrimination'

Alcoholism is a condition that ravages lives and tears families apart. But under the Americans With Disabilities Act, workers who are alcoholics can't lose their jobs simply because of it. But that is exactly what Jonathan Blazek claims happened when Lakewood's city government fired him from his $59,000-a-year job as a snowplow driver in March 2012.

Blazek sued the city alleging what local reports termed "alcoholism discrimination," and last week the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio held a hearing to start proceedings between Blazek and the city, according to Lakewood Patch.

Blazek was working the 4 p.m.-to-midnight shift, but four hours into it, he was found to be drunk after failing a breathalyzer test. He registered .132 blood-alcohol content, twice the legal limit and more than six times the limit for city workers, according to Patch. He was sent home and fired three days later.

I as a person and non drinking alcoholic am responsible for my own actions.
The lawyer that took this case should be shot and the idiot Blazek also.

I will agree with the title that you should not be allowed to be fired simply because your employer may be aware that you are an alcolholic....however....being drunk at work, especially behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, which also violates DOT standards is different. There is no excuse for that.

Alcoholism is not a disease. Drinking is a choice. If an alcoholic has an accident he chose to drive after he chose to drink in excess; therefore he should be responsible for the medical costs, not his insurance. When you do stupid, you should pay for stupid. These are some of the people that cause the continual rise in medical insurance premiums.

Some companies will work with you if you have been found drunk at work. As long as you seek tratment they wont fire you. But I am sure it isnt manditory.

No shame and no responsibility. Its not HIS fault he's a loser. Or a drunk. Or just outright stupid. Nope It's OUR fault for not "helping" him.
