AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and other wireless providers would be required to record and store information about Americans' private text messages for at least two years, according to a proposal that police have submitted to the U.S. Congress.
CNET has learned a constellation of law enforcement groups has asked the U.S. Senate to require that wireless companies retain that information, warning that the lack of a current federal requirement "can hinder law enforcement investigations."
They want an SMS retention requirement to be "considered" during congressional discussionsover updating a 1986 privacy law for the cloud computing era -- a move that could complicate debate over the measure and erode support for it among civil libertarians.

Hell no
It's actually a good thing...they wouldn't be looking at your info without a search warrant. Great tool for homicides, drugs, etc.

Why would they stop?
and you think it will only be used for criminals?
Ask a cop about a search warrant? They laugh.
The people need logs of personal info of cops.
I'm just saying...If it is used for the right purpose...etc...homicides....drug dealers....etc. it can be a good tool.

We knew what you meant. And of course you are correct, IF that's what they did.
However, history has shown that not to be the case.
Anyone who has authority NEEDS to have oversight. Cops have too much authority, in my opinion.
If their power cannot be reduced, all the more reason they need oversight. And have been for decades.
Is that even possible? And to what purpose? That'd be an awful amount of unnecessary data and for nothing. Something to jam the data banks?
The divorce lawyers are the driving force behind this ha ha
What is written can be interpreted alot of different ways. Just look at all the different points of view people get from reading the bible (everyone has a different perspective). Case and point a leo uses your text messages to justify his/her cause. That doesn't mean that's what the senders cause was. Example: Text: I'll meet you in five minutes. LEO: The man was meeting to make a drug deal.
