Route 50 Crossing for Wicomico Middle/High School Students
Salisbury City Police, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Department, and representatives of Wicomico County Public Schools and the Wicomico County Board of Education will take to the streets the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 31 to encourage students to walk safely to school on Safe Walk to School Day.
Safe Walk to School Day will stress to the students the importance of being safe as they walk to school. The event will begin at 7 a.m. with students, parents and community leaders walking from the area of Route 50 and Ward Street in Salisbury. During this walk, we are encouraging kids who walk to Wicomico Middle School and Wicomico High School to utilize the cross walks and crossing guards as they walk across Route 50 to school. Approximately 200 students from Wicomico Middle School and Wicomico High School walk to school each day and cross busy Route 50 to get to school. Speed enforcement cameras have been installed in this section of town and there are crossing guards and a crosswalk at Route 50 and Ward Street. Walkers will arrive at the school by 7:45 a.m. Other special activities associated with the walk include giveaways and a school assembly at Wicomico Middle School.
In 2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. This year’s event is being organized by Salisbury City Police and Wicomico County Board of Education. Good luck with getting them to cross where there is a cross walk -just go by there any day and see where they cross - it sure isn't where the crosswalk is - poor babies might have to walk one more block and they simply will not do it - they would rather take their chances on getting hit.
They walk across Route 50 very slow and dare you to hit them. When you beep to warn them, they turn around and stop and get mad at you. They do not walk on the sidewalk at times and you have to stop and wait if oncoming traffic is coming. They have no respect for others. Even though they are walking, they need to know what the law is regarding traffic.
They MIGHT cross safely on that one day. Other days they could care less. They dare you to hit them so they can sue you for hitting a pedestrian (a kid no less). Any kid caught crossing outside of a crosswalk should get a ticket with REAL consequences. They do the same thing by Bennett. God forbid they walk 10 feet extra to a light. They'd rather play "dodge cars" while drivers have to dodge kids.
They are Church Street thugs who are above the law.
