Let's Get More Creative With What We Already Have

Down in New Mexico they have towns along the river that have what they call, punt boats. No motors, just long poles used to move these boats. They rent them out with a guide in which you can have a picnic for however long you choose to rent them.

You can bring your own meal or they also have boats that go around cooking food and provide drinks in which you can purchase. They pull right up to your punt boat and you order right there on the spot on the river.

They also have bands that play music and sing songs that pull up next to you and travel along side as you go up and down the river.

Mind you, you don't have to decorate them like the ones you see above but I can see sponsors like, The Salisbury Zoo, The Ward Museum and so forth.

If we were to really consider revitalizing Downtown Salisbury and we concentrated more on the resources we already have, this could be a fantastic way to bring life to the River Walk.

Imagine shops and hotels along the river with retail on the first floor. Imagine acoustic guitar players along the river walkway where people could toss a tip into their guitar case as you stroll from one end to the other. Watch the video below. Are you with me?

We have had leadership in Salisbury that does not think out of the box. I want to change that.

I love it. I have to tell you Joe, I'm getting excited again for the first time in many years about Salisbury's possibilities.

better have someone strong on the punt pole. an electric motor would probably be more practical here thanks sjd

It would be cool to have a bunch of boats with like 12 seats and a small kitchen on them that you could enter for a special meal.

I welcome all creative ideas in this situation. I often wondered about the beautiful San Antonio river front and how that would go over in Salisbury. I would love to have a tourist district in the downtown area. Any more ideas?

If you really want to see how to make a river an attraction, go to San Antonio and witness some of their festivals

anonymous 2:48. I used to frequent Sam Antonio often and I agree. We have wasted far too many years under Barrie Tilghman and Jim Ireton though. Its time we start doing things out of the box instead of wasting time building $14,000,000.00 fire stations and $1,400,000.00 fire boats.

Jim would rather build section 8 affordable housing in Downtown instead of revitalizing Downtown and removing ALL of that property OFF the tax roll.

Like I continue to say, IF you like what we've been experiencing for the past 16 years under Jim and Barrie's leadership, PLEASE vote for Jim Ireton. IF you want someone who has a business background and is interested in economic development you'll vote for me.

You have to remember Joe there is a lot of people in power around that dont want anything or growth come here. They just want to waste our tax dollars.

2:13 PM, why do you have to be so negative already - there are plenty of people who could and would do this - and what a wonderful thing it would be - I have always wished we could have something here like this - those of you who are born and raised here really need to think outside the box if you know how.

I am old enough to remember when Salisbury had no mall and when the powers of that day fought to keep out a mall. It seems that people in power fight change and fear the unknown. Nothing is ever achieved without forward thinking. I have been to San Antonio and remembered thinking at that time that the same wonderful atmosphere could be introduced in Salisbury. I applaud anyone who can make change for the better. If the building on the river goes section 8 housing it will have all of the problems of Pemberton Manor I fear. We all know how that turned out.

How can you compare San Antonio, one of the biggest cities in the country, to doing those things here? We don't have the military and the money to support it.

I ll support such out of the box ideas..I knew the condos were a mistake what was needed is the exactly the kind of ideas that need to be implemeneted. Look at brew river!!. It was a sad day when the maryland lady closed up shop..I enjoyed that and other such activities would be welcomed and supported... Instead the politicians back these stupid wasteful projects it was thier greed and lack of vision except for thier buddies pockets....their finicial loss is solice enough for me I jump for joy for the riverfront condo project was a total and expected failure...shame on you Barry and your little dogs too....

joe, i was born and raised here and i'm 65 years old. i'm currently retired and self-employed. i work from home and was in the professional business world for many years. i have several inet businesses and i'm in the process of launching a new business. i don't want to hear anymore about All the natives being "backwards" in their thinking regarding quality development for our city and county.

we have much to offer in this part of the world and it just needs to be "showcased" and promoted in a positive way. not only would it bring new life to Salisbury and the surrounding area; it will provide many good paying jobs. (less need for sec.8).

for those of us who have been blessed enough to travel we have seen what other parts of the world do with their small to medium size cities. we really only need look at pocomoke, berlin, snow hill, easton, soon to be cambridge and many more on the delmarva peninsula. a newer water front in a larger city is wilmington.

joe, you're ideas are great and i know once you really get started, you will ask others to join you to come up with more great ideas. we just need leaders who understand what is needed and act on it.

4:41, agreed. I think the current council turned the latest corner they were backed into with the affordable housing into as cool an idea as it could get. I have a young friend just starting out who is interested in renting one of those units.

People don't realize the ---- the current council has been left with from Barrie Tilghman that Jim Ireton has just continued once he lied to everybody.

I too miss the Maryland Lady. Brew River can go away. I stopped going there when the food sucked and nights were just a fight waiting to happen.

Who decides who is an artist is for renting the new condos? i think it is ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 8:25 I dont think there that many artists in this area and less who would want to live there

Too simple: Start with an IMAX Theater, then just sit back and watch the new businesses flock around it. It has happened in every city that gets a franchise. Then go ahead with the river plans.

The Artist housing project is really lipstick on a pig. Its affordable, tax credit housing. This community and its COUNCIL was duped. It will take a "can do attitude" from the Mayor AND a new council. This council is so backwards and has its head buried it cannot see the light. I know that this blog loves this council so I'm sure that this comment will not appear

11:08-Or start with an actual permanent ampitheater.

Who is going to move the WWTP and the Perdue plant so that all of this would be possible? Until they are gone, you are not going to get significant recreational use of that stretch of the river.

11:08 You are a very smart person. I've lived in towns with a True IMAX theater...just single screens and those theaters would always out gross the larger chain theaters. I had to got to the Smithsonian to see The Dark Knight Rises in real IMAX and in its third week of release, the line for the movie wrapped around Air & Space to get in. IMAX is the future of the movie going experience
