Split Commission Plans Tax Hike, Employee Raises

SNOW HILL -- Employees of Worcester County will likely be seeing their first raise in three years this budget cycle while the property tax rate is set to increase 7 cents. However, neither event is guaranteed as the county budget still has to pass a final vote June 5.

Though the tax hike has been considered by many on the commission and the community a forgone conclusion in a year filled with increasing financial demands from the state, both decisions left the County Commission divided.

The commission voted 4-3 to increase the property tax rate by 7 cents from $.70 to $.77 per $100 of assessed value. The increase would bring Worcester property tax revenue back up to constant yield, or the same level as the previous year. This is because recent property reassessments have lowered the value of land in the county and therefore the amount of taxes to be paid has diminished.

I am opposed to the rise in the property tax rate. We as property owners have continued to be squeezed for what? The commissioners have spent us into this mess they should cut spending, not raise taxes. My commissioner said that they have already cut spending but I do not believe it. As a state employee I have not received a raise in years in fact I been cut, what makes Worchester County employees any better?

That seven cents is just the constant yield. That means they cut money from within the department to be able to fund thease raises, which cost more than the teachers pension shift. Plus they have $15 million in the bank. Worcester COunty needs to stop crying poor - no body believes it anymore.

As a County employee, there is still PLENTY of room to cut within County gov't & don't get me started on the Board of Ed. Thank you Commissioners if the raises are approved.

Look deeper into each department, and you can & will find more money. It's there.

certainly room to cut...walk around and look at how many are playing solitare, listening to music etc on their computers, look at all the new fancy SUV's that are being driven around, etc.
